It involved relocating the console’s electronics, fan, and power supply, so airflow, fit, and service implications matter as much as the materials.
What the custom PS5 enclosure involved
Hackaday reported on May 26, 2021, that Matt from DIY Perks built a bespoke enclosure from walnut and carbon fiber. The project replaced the console’s outer shell with a new structure around its internal components; it was not merely a decorative skin fitted over an intact PS5. Hackaday’s report describes removing the main electronics, fan, and power supply and mounting them on a carbon-fiber baseplate with hexagonal threaded standoffs.
Materials, layout, and access
The sides were made from dark walnut, with openings at the front and rear for connectors and airflow. A recessed front opening used a carbon-fiber cover as both an access cover and the power-button surface. The top was carbon fiber, perforated in a honeycomb pattern, with wood inserts at the intake.
How the build handled airflow
The report says the builder followed the original airflow routing and used adhesive foam strips to direct air through the heatsinks. Those are descriptions of the construction, not proof of its thermal performance: the report does not establish independent temperature, noise, or performance measurements for the finished enclosure.

Why airflow is the central design constraint
Materials and perforations alone do not show whether a console is adequately cooled. Sony’s account of the PS5’s design says the system generates substantial heat and uses a large cooling fan and internal airflow channels designed to maximize airflow while reducing distracting noise. A replacement enclosure therefore needs to preserve the functional intake and exhaust paths, not just provide visible holes. See Sony’s PS5 design story.

- Keep the console at least 10 cm (4 in) from a wall surface.
- Avoid long-fiber carpets and rugs, narrow or cramped spaces, and covering the console with cloth.
- Keep dust from building up on the vents.
These are Sony’s published setup recommendations, not thermal specifications or an endorsement of the custom enclosure. They illustrate why a new shell’s clearances and vent routes need careful attention. The guidance appears in Sony’s PS5 setup FAQ.
Custom enclosure or replacement covers?
If the goal is a different color or surface appearance, Sony documents removing and attaching PS5 console covers. That is a materially different project from relocating internal hardware into a custom case.

Sony’s cover instructions say to shut down and unplug the console and cables, then let it cool before handling the covers. The instructions cover PS5 and Digital Edition consoles; check exact model and edition compatibility when choosing replacement covers.

Warranty terms vary by territory. Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC’s US and Canada hardware-warranty page states a one-year limited hardware warranty and lists exclusions that include damage caused by unauthorized service or opening the product and certain modifications made without written permission. Sony’s UK repair-resources page says selected PS5 spare parts are available to trained, qualified independent repairers and names EET and ASWO as official parts partners. It also says repair guides are intended for qualified repairers and warns that unsuitable tools or unlisted parts can cause malfunction, injury, or damage.
