The two-pictures puzzle in Blue Prince is a word-subtraction puzzle: name the pictures, find two words that differ by one letter, then put that leftover letter in the matching position on the estate map. Solving all the positions spells a clue about dates, small gates and safes.
Where to find the clues
- Commissary: Look at the bulletin board’s “WITH” and “WITHOUT” examples. They indicate that one pictured word should be removed from the other.
- Study: The chalkboard shows a 5-by-9 grid and the example “FACE & ACE.” Remove ACE from FACE and the remaining letter is F. The grid corresponds to positions on the house map.
How to solve each picture pair
- Identify a plausible word for each picture. A picture can represent a synonym or another reasonable interpretation, so try alternatives if the first reading does not fit.
- Compare the words. One should contain exactly one letter that the other does not; cancel their shared letters and keep the single leftover letter.
- Write that letter at the picture’s fixed position on the estate map. The coordinate belongs to the map position, not to the room currently drafted there.
Examples reported in walkthroughs include STAG / TAG, COAST / COST, and DESSERT / DESERT. Each pair leaves one letter after the shared letters are removed. If a candidate pair does not leave exactly one letter, reconsider the picture’s name.
Record letters by map position
Use the estate map or any convenient note-taking surface to track coordinates and letters. Keep the position fixed as rooms change; do not move a solved letter along with a room. A walkthrough reports that pictures can change by day and some rooms have no pictures, so completing the grid may take multiple runs. That behavior is guide-reported rather than independently verified.

Read the rows across to reveal: IF WE COUNT SMALL GATES EIGHT DATES CRACK EIGHT SAFES.
What the completed message tells you
The message points to dates as a way to crack safes. A secondary walkthrough interprets “small gates” as a clue connected to the game’s small gates and wordplay involving “gaits.” Treat that as an interpretive hint, not as a code or a fully established solution; check the in-game clues around the relevant locks.
