Lethal Company can be a good first horror game if you want scares mixed with teamwork, noisy mishaps and a shared objective—not a gentle introduction guaranteed to feel mild. You and your crew scavenge abandoned moons for scrap to sell to the Company. Steam lists both single-player and online co-op, so you can play alone, but the game’s social appeal is clearest when friends join in.
What kind of horror game is Lethal Company?
Steam describes Lethal Company as “A co-op horror about scavenging at abandoned moons to sell scrap to the Company.” That objective gives a group something to do together while danger hangs over the expedition: look for scrap, get it back, and try to complete the job.
The Company store offers virtual tools including lights, shovels, walkie-talkies, stun grenades and a boombox. These are items within the game, not real-world equipment you need to buy. Steam’s listing identifies the game’s premise, modes and tools.
How scary is it for a newcomer?
There is no reliable universal answer. Players react differently: one discussion asks “how scary is this game?” and its replies describe individual experiences, not a representative measure of how frightening the game is. A sudden threat, being caught away from your group, or simply knowing danger may be nearby can make a session tense even when your friends are joking around.

Co-op can make the scares feel more social, but it does not guarantee they will feel less frightening. PC Gamer’s October 27, 2025 roundup describes the game in terms of chaotic beasts, mines, turrets and moon settings—useful context for the kind of hazards involved, not evidence that every beginner will find them manageable. PC Gamer’s roundup places it among co-op horror games to play with friends.
Who is it a good first horror game for?
It may suit you if…
- You would rather face a scary situation with friends than spend the whole session alone.
- You like having a concrete shared task while exploring a horror setting.
- You can enjoy tension alongside confusion, jokes and unpredictable group decisions.
You may want a different first step if…
- You strongly dislike sudden danger or the possibility of getting separated from your friends.
- You want a horror game that stays mild or predictable; the available evidence does not support that promise for Lethal Company.
- You prefer sustained solo tension. Steam lists single-player, but the premise and online co-op mode also make its group-play appeal clear.
Those are practical fit checks, not a difficulty rating. Your own tolerance for surprise and isolation matters more than another player’s account.

Should you play alone or with friends?

It is not an unconditional recommendation for anyone new to horror: people who want guaranteed mild scares, or who are especially uncomfortable with sudden danger and separation, may not find it approachable. Steam’s official listing confirms the scavenging premise and both play modes; how frightening that premise feels is personal.
