In Baldur’s Gate 3, you multiclass by spending a level-up on a new class instead of advancing your current one. There are no ability-score prerequisites, but every level spent elsewhere delays features in your main class—and your character can reach only level 12. The strongest combinations therefore depend on what you want the character to do, not on combining classes for its own sake.
How multiclassing works in BG3
At each level-up, you can continue in your current class or take a level in another. A new class starts at level 1, and its abilities unlock according to that class’s level. Your levels across all classes still add up to your overall character level, which is capped at 12. Larian removed ability-score prerequisites for multiclassing, so BG3 does not enforce the tabletop ability-score gates. Attributes still affect attacks, spellcasting, and other parts of your build.
The BG3 Wiki documents multiclassing as unavailable on Explorer difficulty. If you do not see the option, check your current difficulty settings.
How to choose a level split
Before taking a level in another class, identify the feature you want from it and what you give up by delaying your main class. A dip can add useful tools, but it also postpones that class’s later features. Consider these trade-offs before you commit:

- Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
- Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
- Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
- Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
- Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. - Role: Decide whether you want melee or ranged damage, control, spell burst, or a blend.
- Feature timing: Check whether the new class grants something you will use now, rather than merely sounding complementary.
- Attributes: Classes that rely on different ability scores may pull the build in competing directions.
- Actions: Extra attacks, Bonus Actions, and other resources can compete for the same turn; a feature is less useful if you cannot use it alongside your existing options.
- Feats and main-class progression: Every level allocated elsewhere affects when you reach your main class’s later features and feat opportunities.
- Rules and mode: Check that the interaction fits the game mode and difficulty you are playing.
There is no single best split established across all builds. The combinations below are useful starting points, not a ranked or independently tested post-Patch 8 tier list.
Multiclass combinations worth considering
Larian’s developer feature highlighted several pairings and their synergies. Its popularity comments date to September 2023, so they describe the report at that time—not a current player ranking. The feature does not supply a universally optimal level split for these combinations.
Rogue and Ranger: ranged damage with sneak attacks
Larian described Rogue/Ranger as combining sneak attacks with strong long-range damage, and reported it as the most popular multiclass combination at the time of its September 2023 feature. That statement has no sample size or methodology in the cited passage, so treat it as a dated developer report rather than a current leaderboard.
Barbarian and Fighter: a durable martial pairing
Larian described Barbarian/Fighter as a beefy martial combination and said it followed Rogue/Ranger in popularity in the same 2023 report. It is a natural direction for a durable frontline character, but the source does not prescribe a level split; choose one around the specific class features you want to retain or gain.

Paladin and Pact of the Blade Warlock: attacks and smites
Larian highlighted how a level-5 Warlock’s Deepened Pact can interact with Extra Attack features, supporting a high-attack-count, smite-focused approach. The relevant Warlock subclass choice is Pact of the Blade. Attack interactions can depend on class and game mode rules, so do not assume the same result in every setup.
Thief Rogue and Monk: Bonus Action economy
Thief Rogue’s extra Bonus Action can support additional Monk unarmed attacks, making the pairing about how many useful actions fit into a turn. Larian also described adding Fighter late for Action Surge and taking the Tavern Brawler feat. Those levels and the feat compete with other build choices. The developer feature’s illustration of 12 attacks in a turn is not a universal outcome; it depends on the build and its conditions.
Tempest Cleric and Storm Sorcerer: lightning spell burst
Larian described combining Tempest Cleric’s Destructive Wrath with Storm Sorcerer lightning features. Cleric armor proficiencies can also contribute a defensive benefit. This is a lightning-focused caster direction, but the cited description does not establish a best level split.
Sorcerer and Warlock: an Eldritch Blast concept
Larian pointed to Eldritch Blast scaling into multiple beams and mentioned supporting gear such as the Potent Robe and Quickspell Gloves. This is a cantrip-focused concept, not a complete build guide: the source does not specify an optimized split or establish those items as a best-in-slot setup.

What Patch 8 changes for build planning
Patch 8 added 12 subclasses—one for each class—and Larian said it would be the last game patch to introduce new content. That means multiclass ideas can draw on the expanded subclass roster, but the addition of more options does not make every pairing automatically stronger.
| Class | Patch 8 subclass |
|---|---|
| Barbarian | Path of the Giant |
| Bard | College of Glamour |
| Cleric | Death Domain |
| Druid | Circle of Stars |
| Fighter | Arcane Archer |
| Monk | Way of the Drunken Master |
| Paladin | Oath of the Crown |
| Ranger | Swarmkeeper |
| Rogue | Swashbuckler |
| Sorcerer | Shadow Magic |
| Warlock | Hexblade |
| Wizard | Bladesinging |
The Patch 8 announcement identifies the subclasses but does not provide a complete multiclass ranking. Evaluate a new subclass by the role and features it adds, then weigh those against the levels and progression it costs.
How to respec if a build is not working
Larian says players can respec through an NPC encountered in the early stages of Act 1. Respeccing restarts the build from level 1, letting you choose starting proficiencies, attributes, spells, and cantrips again. The cited announcement does not establish the current respec cost.
