Microsoft has announced Project Helix, its next-generation Xbox console project, and says developer alpha hardware is planned to begin shipping in 2027. That is not confirmation of a consumer launch in 2027.
Will the next Xbox really have 48GB of GDDR7?
It is a reported leak, not a confirmed specification. TweakTown’s October 9, 2025 report, citing alleged specifications from Moore’s Law Is Dead, says the Magnus APU may support up to 48GB of GDDR7 memory on a 192-bit bus. Microsoft’s March 11, 2026 Project Helix announcement does not confirm either figure or publish a complete hardware specification sheet.
Even if the leak proves accurate, “up to 48GB” would describe a reported platform capability, not a confirmed amount of memory available to games. The sources reviewed do not establish how much memory would be reserved for the system, what final retail configuration Microsoft might choose, or whether these alleged specifications will reach a shipping console.
What Magnus specs are being reported?
The following figures come from TweakTown’s October 9, 2025 account of the alleged leak. They are not confirmed by Microsoft, and should not be treated as final Project Helix specifications.

| Alleged detail | Status and qualification |
|---|---|
| Memory | Up to 48GB GDDR7 on a 192-bit bus, according to the leak; not confirmed by Microsoft. |
| Graphics | 68 enabled RDNA 5 compute units, according to the leak; not an official specification. |
| CPU | Up to three Zen 6 cores plus eight Zen 6c cores, according to the leak; not confirmed. |
| NPU | Reported modes of up to 110 TOPS at 6W or 46 TOPS at 1.2W; not confirmed. |
| Power | 250–350W TDP was described in the report as a likely estimate and “not 100%,” rather than a confirmed figure. |
These numbers alone do not establish game performance. The reviewed sources do not provide confirmed clocks, a final memory reservation, retail configuration, or measured performance for Project Helix.
What are Project Helix and Magnus?
Project Helix is Microsoft’s public name for its next-generation first-party Xbox console project. Microsoft says it is built around a custom AMD SoC, co-designed for next-generation DirectX and FSR, and intended to play Xbox console and PC games. Microsoft has not publicly confirmed the alleged 48GB memory configuration or the other detailed Magnus figures.

“Magnus” is reported by Windows Central as AMD’s internal codename for the Xbox SoC, not Microsoft’s name for the console. The distinction matters: Project Helix is the announced console project; Magnus is a reported chip codename associated with it.
When is the next Xbox expected to launch?
Microsoft’s confirmed timing milestone is developer hardware, not a retail release. In its March 11, 2026 Xbox Wire post, Microsoft said it plans to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027. Jason Ronald, VP, Next Generation, Xbox, wrote: “I’m excited to share we plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.”

AMD CEO Lisa Su was reported as saying development was progressing well “to support a launch in 2027.” That phrasing describes support for a possible launch, not an explicit Microsoft commitment that consumers can buy the console in 2027. Windows Central reported that 2027 was a best-case scenario and Microsoft had not fully committed to a hard window. A 2027 retail launch therefore remains unconfirmed.

Microsoft’s public Project Helix announcement does not establish the console’s final memory capacity or type, how much memory games can use, processor and graphics clocks, retail price, or consumer availability date. Until Microsoft publishes those details, the 48GB GDDR7 claim and the rest of the Magnus configuration should remain attributed to the leak rather than presented as announced hardware.
