What kind of game is Marvel Rivals?
Marvel Rivals is a superhero team-based player-versus-player shooter built around two teams of six. Its matches combine a roster of Marvel characters, coordinated abilities called Team-Up Skills, and environments that players can destroy to change the battlefield. NetEase’s game announcement described the intended action as fast-paced and team-focused.
Heroes, team-ups and destructible settings
Each character brings a distinct set of abilities, while Team-Up Skills let selected characters combine their powers. Launch-era examples from the announcement include Rocket Raccoon riding on Groot and Hulk charging Iron Man’s armor. These illustrate the game’s team-up concept; they are not advice about current balance or competitive play.
Destructible environments add another layer to fights: parts of a setting can be damaged or destroyed, so the arena is more than a static backdrop. Together, character abilities, team coordination and changing terrain are the game’s defining hooks.

Which platforms can you play Marvel Rivals on?
NetEase’s global launch announcement named Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Epic Games Store and the official website as platforms or access points. The game launched globally on December 6, 2024, according to that announcement; Steam lists December 5, 2024, reflecting a local-date difference. Platform availability, regional access and system requirements can vary; check the storefront or official site for the version you intend to play. The launch announcement establishes the named platforms, but does not by itself provide a current requirements list for every platform.

Do you have to pay to unlock heroes or gameplay?
No. In a December 5, 2024 monetization post, NetEase said heroes, maps and other gameplay elements are free. It described purchases as cosmetics that change appearance rather than stats, with no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements. The developer’s explanation is in Dev Talk Vol.07: Monetization.
That means the free-to-play model is built around optional visual items rather than charging for access to the playable roster or maps, as described by the developer. The post also outlined LATTICE, a premium currency, and UNITS, which could be exchanged at a 1:1 ratio using LATTICE; limited UNITS could also be earned through the Battle Pass, achievements and events.

The post’s U.S. Steam currency prices and bundle examples were launch-era figures published in 2024, not a current price list. Check the in-game store for current local prices and terms before buying anything.
