What changed in Competitive Play?
Season 9 reset every role in both Role Queue and Open Queue to Unranked. Players needed 10 placement matches in each role to receive that role’s Skill Rank. During placements, the game displayed a predicted rank after each match. After placements, Competitive Updates appeared after every match instead of waiting for a five-win or 15-loss threshold. A progress screen showed modifiers such as win or loss streaks, rank instability, and match favorability.
New rank and grouping rules
Champion was added above Grandmaster. Season 9 also adjusted which ranks could queue together:

Competitive Points and Jade weapons
Season 9 introduced Jade Weapon Variants, priced at 3,000 Competitive Points each. Under the launch reward rules, a win earned 10 points, a draw earned 5, and a loss earned 0. Competitive Progression added 100 points for every 30 progress: wins contributed 3 progress, while draws and losses each contributed 1. Existing Competitive Points were converted to Legacy Competitive Points, which could still be used to buy Golden Weapon Variants for 3,000 points each. These are the reward rules announced for Season 9’s launch.
What changed across the whole game?
Season 9 changed projectile sizes, hero durability, ultimate costs, healing between fights, and the Damage passive. These system-wide adjustments applied alongside individual hero balance changes.

Larger damage projectiles and more health
Many damage-dealing projectiles became larger, with the amount depending on their attack category. Blizzard’s examples included increases of 0.05 meters for rapid or spread hitscan attacks, 0.08 meters for more precise hitscan attacks, 0.05 meters for rapid or shotgun travel-time projectiles, 0.10 meters for travel-time projectiles faster than 50 meters per second, and 0.15 meters for slower travel-time projectiles. Very large projectiles were excluded. The patch notes said combined hero health increased by 15–25%, depending on the hero, and all ultimate costs increased by 10%.
Health regeneration and the Damage passive
All heroes gained passive health regeneration: 20 health per second after five seconds without taking damage. Support heroes began regenerating after 2.5 seconds instead. Blizzard’s patch notes describe the general rule as: “All heroes now regenerate 20 health per second after 5 seconds of not taking damage.”

- New enemies, allies and surprises around every corner - intense combat action with enhanced AI and real-time lighting
- Immense single-player action with maassive landscapes and huge cities to explore and defend - destructible and interactive environments
- Take the action online with your Xbox Live and switch sides, to become a Covenant Elite!
The Damage passive no longer granted reload speed on elimination. Instead, dealing damage reduced the healing received by affected enemies by 20% for two seconds. Quick melee damage also increased from 30 to 40.
Which heroes received notable changes?
Pharah’s movement rework
Pharah’s changes reshaped how she moved and managed airtime, rather than simply adjusting damage values. Hover Jets fuel recharged only while she was grounded, while her aerial speed boost increased. She gained Jet Dash as a secondary-fire ability, and both Jump Jet and Concussive Blast were retuned. The full ability values and other hero adjustments are listed in Blizzard’s patch notes.

Examples of other launch balance changes
The wider roster also received individual tuning on top of the health increases. At the Season 9 launch, D.Va’s mech armor rose from 300 to 375, and Mauga’s health rose from 300 to 400. Reinhardt’s hammer damage increased from 85 to 100, while Winston’s Tesla Cannon damage increased from 60 to 75 per second. Genji’s Dragonblade swing recovery decreased from 0.9 to 0.7 seconds, and Moira’s secondary-fire damage increased from 50 to 65 per second. These are historical values from the February 13, 2024 patch, not claims about current live balance.

What new modes and seasonal content arrived?
Cosmic Crisis
Cosmic Crisis was a new co-op mission for four players, set around Ecopoint: Antarctica.
Hero Mastery: Gauntlet
Hero Mastery: Gauntlet added a team mode built around fighting waves of enemies, defending towers, and choosing upgrades. Blizzard’s Season 9 announcement also highlighted themed Battle Pass cosmetics, including the Ancient Caller Mythic Moira skin in Premium progression. These were in-game offerings; they are distinct from physical merchandise.
How to read the Season 9 changes
The update combined changes to the rules of combat with separate hero and map tuning. The broad projectile, health, ultimate-cost, and regeneration changes altered the baseline shared by the roster; Pharah’s rework and the individual hero adjustments then changed how specific characters played. Competitive changes affected rank placement and rewards, while Junkertown’s revisions changed cover and routes on one map. The figures and mechanics above describe the Season 9 launch patch only; they do not establish what remains in effect in a later season.
