Start by checking EA and PlayStation service status, then identify whether the problem is high ping, jitter, packet loss, or a connection failure. After that, test one network change at a time—starting with stopping other network activity and, if you use Wi-Fi, trying a wired connection. These steps can improve stability, but none can guarantee lower ping when the cause is an outage or the route to a game data center.
Before changing settings, identify the connection problem
Ping is the round-trip time for game data to travel from your PC or console to a game data center and back. High ping can make play feel delayed; interruptions may also cause stutter or disconnections. EA explains the measure in its current EA SPORTS FC connection-quality guide, so treat it as general networking guidance rather than confirmation of a FIFA 23-specific display: EA’s explanation of connection quality.
Ping is not the only measure of connection quality. EA distinguishes ping from packet loss, when data fails to arrive, and jitter, which is variation in ping over time. Those problems can feel different, and a single ping reading does not establish that the connection is otherwise stable. The current EA SPORTS FC monitoring explanation is useful for these general definitions, but it does not establish that FIFA 23 shows the same indicators: EA’s connection-quality monitoring guide.
- Consistently high ping: input may feel delayed even if the connection does not disconnect.
- Ping that jumps around: think fluctuation or jitter rather than only a high steady reading.
- Stutter or brief freezes: packet loss or instability may be involved; do not assume ping alone explains it.
- Unable to connect: check service status and basic connectivity before trying latency tweaks.
1. Check EA and PlayStation service status
First check whether EA game services are reporting a problem. PlayStation players should also check PSN status. EA’s general connection troubleshooting starts with service checks, and PlayStation’s PS5 connection-error guidance likewise advises checking PSN status. These pages report changing conditions, so check them when the problem is happening: EA service status guidance and PlayStation’s PS5 server-connection advice.

If a relevant service is down, wait for it to recover rather than repeatedly changing router or console settings. A local network change cannot resolve a service outage.
2. Separate a FIFA 23 problem from a wider connection problem
Notice whether other online games or services are also struggling at the same time. If several services are affected, the issue may be with your home connection, ISP, or a broader service problem. If only FIFA 23 feels delayed while other services work normally, record when it happens and what the symptom is before contacting EA or your ISP. A working web connection does not by itself prove that the route to a game data center is healthy.

3. Stop other network activity while you play
Pause large downloads, game updates, cloud backups, and other activities using the connection, including on other devices where practical. EA’s current EA SPORTS FC troubleshooting advice recommends stopping other activities during play. This is a general network step, not a guaranteed FIFA 23 ping fix: EA’s connection troubleshooting steps.
4. Try a wired connection if you are on Wi-Fi
If practical, connect your PC or console directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. EA Help says, in the context of EA SPORTS FC, that an Ethernet cable usually provides a more stable connection. That supports trying wired networking as a stability measure—not promising that it will lower every player’s ping or eliminate a delay caused elsewhere: EA’s connection troubleshooting steps.

Use a suitable Ethernet cable for your PC or console and router; the cited guidance does not require a particular cable category. If running a cable is impractical, compare Wi-Fi conditions before buying equipment.
5. If you stay on Wi-Fi, compare bands and placement
If your router and device support both Wi-Fi bands, try 5 GHz when the device is close enough to receive a stable signal. EA’s current EA SPORTS FC guidance characterizes 5 GHz as generally faster and more stable than 2.4 GHz; results still depend on your home and equipment. A 2.4 GHz signal may reach farther, while distance, walls, and interference can affect either band. This is general EA guidance, not a FIFA 23 benchmark: EA’s connection troubleshooting steps.

Compare one band or device position at a time and play under similar conditions. A weaker 5 GHz signal may perform worse than a strong 2.4 GHz connection, so do not treat the band name alone as proof of improvement.

If you have connection errors or broader instability, restart the network equipment. PlayStation’s PS5 connection-error guidance says to turn off the router and modem, wait at least five minutes, and then restart them. This is basic connectivity troubleshooting, not a targeted ping optimization: PlayStation’s PS5 server-connection advice.

- Turn off the modem and router.
- Wait at least five minutes.
- Turn them back on, allow the connection to return, and retry the game.
7. Change one thing at a time and compare like with like
Make a single change, then compare play under similar conditions—for example, the same platform and connection type, at a similar time, with other network activity paused. Note the time, symptom, and whether you were using Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Changing several settings at once makes it difficult to tell what helped or whether the problem simply cleared on its own.
8. Keep platform and matchmaking context in perspective
FIFA 23 groups cross-play by console generation: PC and PS5 are in the newer-generation group, while PS4 shares a group with Xbox One. That is useful context when comparing who you can match with, but it does not show that one platform needs a different ping fix or has a particular latency advantage. 9. Do not assume a local setting can fix every cause
Ping measures the trip between your machine and a game data center. A home-network adjustment may help if the problem is local, but it cannot guarantee lower latency when the cause is a service outage, the route beyond your home, or distance to the data center. The cited EA guidance does not establish FIFA 23 server locations or let you infer a particular routing behavior: EA’s explanation of connection quality.
10. Escalate with useful details if the problem persists
If the connection remains poor after service checks and basic network steps, contact EA or your internet provider as appropriate. Share the platform, whether you use Wi-Fi or Ethernet, when the issue occurs, and whether the symptom is steady delay, fluctuation, packet loss, stutter, or inability to connect. Those details are more useful for troubleshooting than simply reporting “lag.”

The cited guidance does not establish VPNs, port forwarding, DNS changes, DMZ settings, registry edits, or paid network optimizers as proven FIFA 23 ping fixes. Avoid treating them as reliable solutions on that basis.
