Sony has published a patent application describing an operating device that could generate and store electricity using photovoltaic elements. The filing suggests one way a future PlayStation controller might reduce reliance on conventional charging, but it does not confirm that Sony is making or planning to sell a solar-powered controller.
What Sony’s patent actually describes
The application is WO2025046814A1, “Operation device”. Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. filed it on August 30, 2023; it was published on March 6, 2025. The translated patent record describes a user-operated device with multiple photovoltaic elements in its housing and a storage unit for electricity those elements generate.
The disclosure is broader than adding one solar panel to the top of a finished DualSense. It discusses photovoltaic elements with different generation characteristics and examples in which the controller or a connected information-processing device selects or connects elements expected to generate more efficiently during a particular game. A modified example also allows a conventional rechargeable or disposable battery to provide auxiliary power.
The record’s description is translated from Japanese. Its abstract characterizes the invention as an operating device equipped with a user-operated input unit; technical wording should therefore be read as a translation, not as a Sony product announcement.

How the proposed charging system might work
In the proposed arrangement, photovoltaic elements convert available light into electricity, and a storage unit accumulates that electricity for the device. The application also describes choosing or connecting among elements based on expected generation efficiency. These are design concepts in the filing, not verified capabilities of a commercial controller.
The patent provides no verified figures for charging speed, runtime, cost, efficiency, or required light conditions. It does not establish whether ordinary indoor lighting would provide enough energy for practical play. Those questions cannot be answered from the application alone.

Why the filing discusses battery depletion
The description frames the problem as what happens when a battery-powered controller runs out of power: a user may need to replace or charge a battery, and the device may not function if no replacement, charger, or external power source is available. The stated aim is to operate a device without relying on externally charged secondary batteries or disposable primary batteries, while a modified example still permits conventional batteries as auxiliary power.

No. A published patent application shows that Sony disclosed a proposed design; it is not evidence of a manufactured product, a retail launch, or a release schedule. The patent record marks the application pending, but cautions that its legal-status label is an assumption rather than a legal conclusion. The filing alone does not establish whether the design will become a product.

For players who need a charging solution now, use a compatible controller charging cable or accessory and check its specifications against the controller model and console setup. Such accessories are ordinary workarounds, not products shown to use this patent’s photovoltaic design or endorsed by Sony.
