That is one publication’s editorial order—not a franchise-wide consensus or a complete catalog of every regional, handheld and mobile release. The list below follows GamesRadar+’s 24-entry ranking, which includes mainline games and spin-offs. It weighs setting, characters, story, stealth, combat, exploration and how well each game’s mechanics hold up; your preferred style may lead you to a different starting point.

The order runs from worst to best. The descriptions identify what distinguishes each entry; the placements are GamesRadar+’s editorial judgment, not scores from a single review system.
24. Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry
This standalone expansion follows Adéwalé as he resists slavery in Haiti. Its focused story gives it a distinct subject and protagonist, but GamesRadar+ places it below the broader, full-game experiences on its list.
23. Assassin’s Creed: Altaïr’s Chronicles
A handheld and mobile prequel to Altaïr’s story, this entry sits near the bottom of a list spanning very different formats. It is a spin-off rather than a mainline console-scale adventure.

Ezio stars in this 2D handheld platforming adventure. It offers a different way to follow the character, but its compact side-game format places it well below the main Ezio trilogy.

This PSP game continues Altaïr’s story. It is a direct character-led companion to the original game, but its handheld scope distinguishes it from the larger entries that rank higher.

17. Assassin’s Creed Pirates
This mobile spin-off centers on ship combat. It draws on the naval side of the franchise without matching the breadth of a full mainline adventure.
16. Assassin’s Creed III
Set during the American Revolution, Assassin’s Creed III introduces naval combat to the series. Its place here is a reminder that a historically ambitious mainline game can still rank below the entries that refine or build more fully on its ideas.
15. Assassin’s Creed Liberation
Aveline’s story takes place in New Orleans. Originally a companion-scale game, it gives the series a new lead and setting without the reach of the mainline titles above it.
14. Assassin’s Creed Rogue
Shay Cormac’s story follows an Assassin who becomes a Templar, turning the series’ central conflict into the protagonist’s personal shift in allegiance. That perspective makes Rogue one of the franchise’s more distinctive narratives.
13. Assassin’s Creed
The 2007 original introduces Altaïr and the series’ core premise. Its historical importance is considerable, but its position outside the top tier reflects the challenge of comparing an early foundation with later games that expanded the formula.

Shao Jun stars in this stylized side-scrolling stealth adventure. Of the three Chronicles games in the ranking, it places highest, while still representing a deliberately different branch of the series.

Set in Paris during the French Revolution, Unity combines co-op with assassination investigations. Its placement just outside the top ten recognizes a game built around a distinctive city and mission structure.
10. Assassin’s Creed Revelations
Ezio’s story moves to Constantinople, while the game also follows Altaïr through his final chapter. That dual focus makes it a bridge between two central characters in the earlier series.
9. Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood
Ezio returns in Rome, where recruitment and brotherhood mechanics broaden the Assassin fantasy beyond a lone protagonist. The game’s focus on building a network distinguishes it from the more personal stories around it.
8. Assassin’s Creed Mirage
Basim’s origin story returns attention to stealth in ninth-century Baghdad. Ubisoft’s guide to playing the series describes Mirage as focused on Basim’s origins and stealth, making it a clear alternative to the larger RPG-style entries.

2. Assassin’s Creed II
Ezio’s Renaissance origin story is the series’ highest-ranked earlier-era adventure. It establishes the character who anchors Brotherhood and Revelations, while earning a place just below the list’s top choice.
1. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Set in Ancient Greece, Odyssey tops the ranking with a choice-led RPG approach. Its first-place position makes it the list’s best fit for players who want exploration and role-playing choices more than a return to the franchise’s earlier stealth-first structure.

“Best” depends partly on what a list counts. GamesRadar+ includes 24 mainline and spin-off entries, while Metacritic’s cited ranking covers 14 mainline games and orders them by Metascore. PC Gamer’s ranking uses another boundary, excluding handheld and mobile exclusives that were not ported to PC. Those lists answer different questions, so their orders should not be treated as direct contradictions or as a single universal verdict.
The series itself also changes shape over time. Its compact stealth-and-assassination roots gave way to larger RPG systems in games such as Odyssey and Valhalla, while Mirage gives stealth greater emphasis again. Ubisoft’s guide also traces the move from Assassin’s Creed III’s first naval combat to Black Flag’s expanded Caribbean ship experience. The ranking therefore compares different kinds of games, not merely successive versions of one fixed formula.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is not part of GamesRadar+’s 24-entry order. Ubisoft says the remake released on July 9, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. It is built from the original Black Flag with updated visuals, gameplay mechanics and new content, rather than a new historical setting or wholly new story. Whether to rank it separately depends on whether the list counts distinct releases or distinct original games; this ranking follows the latter approach for Black Flag.
