Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a gorgeous, music-rich journey with a compelling party battle system and a generous world of diversions. That abundance is also its biggest risk: a reviewer found its open-world tasks repetitive and its pacing uneven. You can focus on the main story, but players who dislike checklist-style exploration should expect to weigh that friction against the game’s memorable places, combat and side activities.
What kind of Final Fantasy VII game is Rebirth?
Rebirth is the second chapter in Square Enix’s planned three-game reimagining of the original Final Fantasy VII, not a complete retelling of that game. The party leaves Midgar and travels through a much broader world, with the story heading toward the Forgotten Capital. Square Enix describes it as an action RPG whose battles combine real-time action with strategic choices and party members. Square Enix’s game page provides the official overview.
That middle-chapter status matters: the game expands the journey rather than wrapping up the whole saga. Square Enix calls it a standalone experience and includes a recap video in the menu, so newcomers have a way to catch up. The recap can orient you, but familiarity with Final Fantasy VII Remake and its characters is likely to make developments easier to follow.
Why is Rebirth beautiful?
The strongest case for the game is how it brings its settings to life. A PC Gamer review by Baxter Burchill praised the world’s vistas and environmental detail, as well as a soundtrack whose range made the journey emotionally affecting. Those are one reviewer’s responses, not a measure of universal opinion, but they capture the game’s distinctive appeal: it makes travel through the world feel like an event, not just a route between fights.
#1 Best Overall
- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: o "Graphics Mode" prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics o "Performance Mode" prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable “Photo Mode”
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
The music helps give locations and encounters their own character, while the party’s presence makes the journey feel social. Rebirth’s affection for the world and characters is evident in its willingness to linger over places, activities and familiar faces. For players drawn to the series’ atmosphere as much as its plot, that generosity is a real strength.
How does combat and exploration work?
Strategic action with the party
Combat blends direct action with tactical decisions and switching among party members. That gives encounters a brisk surface while leaving room to think about how the group should respond. The party system is central to the experience: battles are not simply a sequence of solo action-RPG skirmishes, but a chance to bring different characters into the fight.

A wide menu of diversions
Exploration combines story quests with world intel, optional battles and mini-games. Square Enix’s official PC overview highlights the scale of those activities, while launch materials pointed to chocobo travel and Queen’s Blood, a card game, as examples of the variety. Some diversions can make the world feel full of things worth discovering; others may feel like tasks to clear before moving on.
That tension is the heart of the “bloated” criticism. In his PC Gamer review, Burchill argued that the volume and repetition of world-intel activities felt like busywork, and also criticized the story’s pacing. That is one critic’s assessment, not a verdict every player will share. Still, the design puts a large amount of optional activity alongside the main journey, so the world can feel inviting or overfilled depending on how much completionist play you enjoy.

Is Rebirth worth playing if you don’t want to do all the side content?
Yes, if the main attractions for you are the party, combat, music and the journey itself; the game’s optional activities do not need to define your playthrough. But the world is built to offer a lot to do, and a reviewer found the world-intel loop repetitive. If you dislike map checklists and repeated side objectives, treat the optional content as a menu rather than a quota: follow the quests that interest you, and return to the main story when exploration stops being fun.
The trade-off is that skipping activities means spending less time with some of the world’s diversions. That is preferable to turning every discovery into an obligation. Rebirth’s scale is part of its appeal, but you do not have to approach it as a completion checklist.

Which platforms can you play Rebirth on?
Square Enix currently lists Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S. It first launched on PS5 on February 29, 2024; it is no longer accurate to describe it as a PS5 exclusive. Platform availability can change, so check the publisher’s current game page for the latest listing.
There is no established controlled comparison here that identifies a best-performing console version. Choose based on the hardware you own and whether portability or a higher-end display and performance setup matters more to you. On PC, check the published requirements against your system, and consider whether you prefer a controller or keyboard and mouse; Square Enix lists support for both DualSense and keyboard/mouse.
Published PC requirements
Square Enix lists these PC targets on its official PC requirements page. They are the publisher’s specifications, not a guarantee of identical results on every system. High-spec PCs may support up to 120 FPS; that figure should not be read as a promise of that frame rate on consoles or on all PC hardware.
| Preset | Operating system | Memory | Storage | Publisher’s target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Windows 10 64-bit | 16 GB | 155 GB SSD | 30 FPS at 1080p, Low |
| Recommended | Windows 11 64-bit | 16 GB | 155 GB SSD | 60 FPS at 1080p, Medium |
Square Enix also lists support for up to 120 FPS on high-spec PC systems. Check the current requirements before buying, since specifications can be updated.
How strong is the critical reception?
Square Enix’s 2026 platform announcement reports more than 125 perfect scores from media and 40 Game of the Year awards. Those are figures reported by the publisher; the announcement does not provide a complete methodology or an independent audit. They offer a sense of the recognition Square Enix cites, but they do not erase the criticisms raised in an individual review or establish that every player will respond the same way.
