The Thaumaturge Review: An Ambitious RPG That’s a Diamond in the Rough

The Thaumaturge’s supernatural take on 1905 Warsaw, atmospheric exploration, and writing stand out, while repetitive encounters and limited combat variety are notable caveats.

The Thaumaturge is worth considering if you want an RPG built around an unusual historical setting, atmospheric exploration, and supernatural investigation. Its 1905 Warsaw is the main attraction; in PC Gamer’s review, combat variety and repetitive encounters are the rough edges that keep the game from matching its strongest ideas.

What kind of game is The Thaumaturge?

The Thaumaturge is a single-player, story-led RPG developed by Fool’s Theory and published by 11 bit studios. You play Wiktor Szulski, a thaumaturge returning to Warsaw in 1905, when the city was under Russian imperial rule. He investigates people and places through supernatural perception, influences others, and fights with folklore-inspired creatures called salutors.

The game’s premise makes its setting more than a backdrop: Warsaw’s social and cultural diversity is part of the story’s texture, while the supernatural elements offer Wiktor a way to uncover secrets and affect the people he meets. The official 11 bit studios introduction outlines the game’s historical-fantasy concept, and PlayStation’s game description likewise foregrounds perception and investigation.

What works best: setting, atmosphere, and writing

In her March 4, 2024 review for PC Gamer, Maddi Chilton awarded the game 82 and identified its setting as a compelling reason to play. Her review highlights the atmosphere of exploring Warsaw and the writing embedded in the traces people leave behind. Those details help make investigation feel tied to a place and its inhabitants, rather than simply a route between fights.

#1 Best Overall
The Thaumaturge XSX
  • Shape your story – as a full-fledged RPG, it allows you to alternate your choices and make you deal with the aftermath
  • Develop your character – creating your own version of the Thaumaturge will allow you to approach situations in different ways
  • Experience unique turn-based combat and defeat your foes using human attacks and skills as well as psychic strikes delivered by Salutors
  • Influence and manipulate the temperaments of other characters to bend their will to your liking
  • Tame the power of Salutors – use the unique set of their skills to gain an advantage while exploring the world

Social manipulation is another of the game’s distinctive strengths. Wiktor’s abilities make conversation and reading people part of the RPG’s central appeal, alongside exploration and combat. That gives the game a stronger identity than a standard fantasy adventure: its supernatural premise is connected to social life as well as battles.

Where the ambition falls short

Chilton’s review also identifies a mismatch between the game’s broad ideas and the experience of playing through its encounters. Ordinary fights can feel random and repetitive, and the range of combat options may seem narrower than the initial choice of salutors suggests. Some familiar RPG mechanics also pull attention away from the exploration and social world that the story handles more effectively.

The plot is linear, according to the same review. That limits how much the game’s investigation premise translates into narrative freedom, though Chilton still found the characters and setting emotionally effective. This is one reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict; it points to the key trade-off to weigh before buying: an evocative world and strong writing are better-supported attractions than deep combat variety.

Is The Thaumaturge worth playing?

It is a stronger fit for players who value atmosphere, character writing, and an unusual setting than for those seeking combat systems that constantly expand or a highly branching story. The game’s core appeal is the chance to explore an alternate supernatural vision of 1905 Warsaw and investigate the people who inhabit it. If repetitive encounters are a deal-breaker, the combat caveat deserves particular attention; if story and setting come first, those strengths may be enough to make the rough patches worthwhile.
