The development team said it could not offer a service players would find satisfactory over a long period. The company also said the Kingdom Hearts series would continue and that work on Kingdom Hearts IV was ongoing at the time.
Why was Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link canceled?
Square Enix’s development team said it had concluded that it would be difficult to provide a service players would find satisfactory over a long period. The team’s announcement, reproduced in Gematsu’s May 14, 2025 report, said: “Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by lots of players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development.”

Was Missing-Link ever released?
No. Square Enix canceled development before the game’s service began, so Missing-Link did not reach its announced service start. Its planned release date had already shifted from 2024 to an unannounced date in November 2024, according to Gematsu’s project timeline.

What was Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link?
Missing-Link was planned as a smartphone role-playing game built around location information and real-world walking: players would move through the real world to progress through in-game adventures. Square Enix’s safety guidelines, last updated January 31, 2024, describe a hands-free mode that could automatically begin battles with nearby Heartless and interact with nearby recovery spots.
The same guidance urged players to stay aware of their surroundings, avoid playing in dangerous places or while driving, and avoid showing their current location in screenshots or videos shared online. These details describe the game’s intended design and test-era guidance, not a publicly released service.

Is Kingdom Hearts IV still happening?
In its May 2025 cancellation announcement, Square Enix said the Kingdom Hearts series would continue and that development on Kingdom Hearts IV was ongoing. That was the company’s status statement at the time; it did not give a release date for the game.
The series is a role-playing game franchise created through collaboration between Disney and Square Enix. Square Enix Holdings says the first game launched for PlayStation 2 in March 2002. Its Annual Report 2025 records more than 38 million global package shipments and digital sales for the franchise as of the end of June 2025. That figure covers the series, not Missing-Link.

What can fans play instead?
Missing-Link is not available to play. Fans looking for other entries can consider released Kingdom Hearts games or collections, including KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX. Check the specific edition and platform before buying: a released collection is an alternative way to play franchise games, not a way to access Missing-Link.
