Rocksteady made the update free for people who owned the game. In Episode 1, the gameplay unlock was to reach Fear Rank 35, complete the newly available Mayhem mission, and defeat Brainiac.
When did the Joker arrive?
Rocksteady announced Season 1 on March 8, 2024, and released it on March 28. The update added the Joker as a playable character, alongside a new Elseworld, missions, weapons, and gear. The update was free for game owners; Rocksteady did not describe the Joker as a separate paid character purchase. Rocksteady’s March 8, 2024 developer update announced the date and content.

How to unlock the Joker in Episode 1
Rocksteady’s April 5, 2024 instructions gave this progression route:
- Complete missions in Metropolis, Strongholds, and Incursions to raise Episode 1’s Fear Rank.
- Reach Fear Rank 35.
- Start the Mayhem mission that becomes available at that rank.
- Defeat the new version of Brainiac. The Joker is then added to your squad roster.
These steps describe the Episode 1 unlock as Rocksteady explained it in April 2024; they should not be taken as a guarantee about every current game mode, save, or service state. See Rocksteady’s April 5, 2024 developer update for the original instructions.

Fear Rank and Mastery Level are different
Fear Rank was Episode 1’s name for Episode Rank, which tracked episode progress and its rewards. Fear Rank 35 was the Joker unlock threshold. Mastery Level, by contrast, set the escalating challenge for Incursion and Mayhem missions; it was not the rank needed to unlock him.

Season 1 continued with Episode 2. In its May 22, 2024 patch notes, Rocksteady said the Joker Elseworld would open further and listed new missions and Green Lantern-infused enemies. Those enemies could summon constructs and were immune to direct damage until the constructs were destroyed. The notes also included a fix for a bug that could prevent the Joker’s traversal and combat abilities from activating. Read the Episode 2 patch notes.

The official community index lists later seasons and Episode 6, confirming that the March 2024 Season 1 launch is historical. That index does not establish whether the game’s online services are currently available.
