Ubisoft has not publicly confirmed that project’s current status, named Maverick as one of its Far Cry projects in development, or given it a release date.
What is Project Maverick?
Project Maverick is the reported codename for a separate Far Cry multiplayer game built around extraction and survival rather than the series’ usual campaign-led open-world format. Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, citing people familiar with development, reported that Maverick began as a multiplayer component for Far Cry 7 before becoming its own project in early 2023. Ubisoft’s official franchise description broadly characterizes Far Cry as first-person shooter games with varied settings and stories; it has not publicly confirmed Maverick’s reported design.

The reported setting was Alaska. Players would face harsh conditions, wildlife, AI soldiers and other players while trying to extract. Those details come from reporting, not an official Ubisoft announcement. An earlier Insider Gaming report described a more elaborate loop:
- Gather resources in the environment and craft equipment and supplies.
- Store gathered gear in a Hideout, with the option to play solo or in a team.
- Complete contracts to progress, while risking carried gear and progress on death; items kept in the Hideout would remain.
These mechanics were attributed to the outlet’s sources and should be treated as a reported concept, not a confirmed feature list.

What does “rebooted” mean in this report?
Insider Gaming reported on March 4, 2025 that Maverick had undergone an internal review and was rebooted, with Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Sherbrooke expected to return it to prototyping. The report also described staff moving off the project at that time; that historical detail does not establish who is working on it now.
The outlet said the precise reason for the reboot was unclear. It suggested the decision could relate to Ubisoft’s broader effort to streamline teams and projects, but that was the outlet’s inference, not a confirmed explanation. “Rebooted” is the report’s description; it does not establish that the game was cancelled.

Has Ubisoft confirmed the game is still in development?
No project-specific confirmation appears in the Ubisoft statements covered here. In January 2026, Ubisoft announced a portfolio reset, saying it had discontinued six games and would give seven others additional development time. The announcement did not name Maverick. It listed Far Cry under Vantage Studios, the Creative House focused on extending major franchises, which offers organizational context but says nothing conclusive about Maverick’s fate.
In February 2026, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said, “On Far Cry, anticipation is high, and we currently have two very promising projects in development.” The statement, reported by PC Gamer, did not identify those projects. It therefore cannot confirm that Maverick is one of them.

Ubisoft’s March 2025 announcement about its new subsidiary described plans to expand multiplayer offerings, increase content-release frequency and add social features across the relevant brands. That was a broad strategy statement, not a commitment to Maverick.

No current release date for Maverick is established in these sources. The earlier Insider Gaming report included projected timing for an alpha and an April 2025 release estimate; those are outdated projections, not a current schedule. Ubisoft’s later comments about Far Cry projects do not name Maverick or provide a date.

How different would Maverick be from a usual Far Cry game?
If the reported concept is accurate, its defining difference would be the extraction loop: gather and craft, decide what gear to carry, and attempt to leave alive while competing with environmental and human threats. The reported Hideout and death-related loss mechanics would make preparation and risk management central. By contrast, Ubisoft’s public description of the franchise emphasizes first-person shooters with varied settings and stories, rather than confirming any particular Maverick structure.
That distinction is based on the reported concept, not a hands-on build or an announced feature set. There are no confirmed alternate versions or announced replacement projects to compare with Maverick.
