Warhammer: The Old World brings Warhammer’s rank-and-file fantasy battles back as a supported tabletop game, but it is a revival of the setting and format—not simply the old rules reprinted. In a review updated July 4, 2026, Wargamer’s Timothy Linward describes a tactical, positioning-heavy game whose clever ideas can be exciting and whose high-impact dice rolls can swing a battle. The reviewed Core Set is a strong starting point if you want its two armies and play aids; the broader miniature range is less consistent in age and design.
What is Warhammer: The Old World?
The Old World is a rank-and-file tabletop wargame set in Warhammer’s World of Legend, long before the Age of Sigmar. Armies use square-based miniatures and maneuver in formed units, with flanking and outmaneuvering opponents central to play. Games Workshop describes it as a game of armies on square bases aiming to “flank and outmanoeuvre the foe” (Games Workshop’s game overview).
Warhammer: The Old World launched on January 20, 2024, according to PC Gamer’s January 2024 report. It restores the classic setting and rank-and-flank format under a new game title; that does not mean the previous Warhammer Fantasy Battle rules were simply reissued unchanged.
How does The Old World play?
Positioning matters before the fighting starts
In his review updated July 4, 2026, Wargamer’s Timothy Linward describes a game about maneuvering large, unwieldy units into favorable positions before combat. That emphasis makes it a different proposition from a small-scale skirmish game: you are managing formations and their relationships on the battlefield, not only moving individual models into range.
#1 Best Overall
- An excellent way to begin your journey into Warhammer: The Old World
- Includes 54 plastic miniatures for the Armies of Grand Cathay and Warriors of Chaos
- An updated hardcover rulebook with revised rules, a Battle March game mode, and new artwork
- Loaded with accessories a game mat, reference sheets, army list booklet, range ruler, templates, dice, and more
- These miniatures require assembly and are supplied unpainted
Dice can create dramatic swings
Linward also highlights the impact of rolls for charges, artillery, combat challenges, and tests. That can give battles sudden momentum shifts, but it means players who prefer highly predictable outcomes may find the randomness frustrating. This is one reviewer’s assessment, based on a review sample, assembly and reading time, and a test match—not a survey of players.
Linward’s overall verdict is enthusiastic but qualified: “I love Warhammer: The Old World, but it’s a design mutant, an inelegant hybrid of many very clever ideas that add up to more than the sum of their parts but which also have jutting edges destined to trip you up.” In practical terms, expect a game with rewarding tactical texture as well as rules and interactions that may take time to learn.

What rules and books do you need?
At launch, Games Workshop described a 352-page core rulebook, including more than 70 pages of World of Legend background, core and advanced rules, magic rules, army-building guidance, and battlefield setup. Those are launch-era specifications published in 2023, not a guarantee that every current printing or product arrangement is identical (Games Workshop’s 2023 overview).
The same overview divided launch faction rules across Forces of Fantasy and Ravening Hordes, covering nine factions in total. It presented Arcane Journals as optional expansions adding history, scenarios, and themed army options. For the core rules, the core rulebook and the relevant faction book were the essential launch-era references; an Arcane Journal was not required simply to play the core game.

Rules receive updates. Games Workshop says its The Old World downloads page provides FAQs with up-to-date errata and answers, reflecting feedback from the community, playtesters, and studio. The publisher’s 2025 rulebook FAQ is labeled Version 1.3 and says it is revised regularly, so treat that document as evidence of versioned updates—not as confirmation it is the latest FAQ in 2026. Check the official downloads page for the rules applicable to your game.
What comes in the Core Set?
The Core Set reviewed by Linward includes a revised core rulebook, starter armies for Warriors of Chaos and Grand Cathay, booklets and reference sheets, tokens, dice, and a fold-out battle map. Its value is most straightforward if you want those two forces and the included play materials. Linward called it the least expensive way to obtain precisely those listed contents compared with buying them separately, in his July 4, 2026 review; no current regional prices or availability are established here.

- Take the plunge into the 41st Millennium with the Ultimate Starter Set for Warhammer 40,000.
- This box gives you a complete introductory experience, with loads of incredible models, a battlefield to fight over, helpful guides, and all the dice, tools, and rules you need to play your first games.
- Pick the noble Space Marines or swarming Tyranids, give control of the other army to a friend or family member, and battle it out for hours of entertainment.
- There’s no better way to get into the Warhammer 40,000 hobby – this box is also an excellent way to expand your existing collections.
If you already own an army, the Core Set’s two forces may be less useful. You may prefer the rulebook and the faction book relevant to your army, checking current product listings and updates before buying. Product contents and regional availability can change, so confirm the current listing rather than assuming the reviewed bundle is unchanged.

The miniatures are a mixed-age range, according to Linward’s 2026 review. He reports that many kits for most factions first appeared for Warhammer Fantasy Battle at least a decade earlier, and that some older models return through irregular made-to-order releases. That makes The Old World a return to classic Warhammer as much in its miniature heritage as in its battlefield format, though the age of kits varies by faction.

Linward identifies Grand Cathay as an exception: he describes it as a new faction introduced in 2025 specifically for The Old World. If the age or availability of miniatures matters to your decision, check the current official product listings for the particular force you want rather than generalizing from the range as a whole.
Is The Old World worth getting into?
The Old World is a good fit if you want formed fantasy armies, deliberate positioning, and the atmosphere of classic Warhammer. It is a less obvious fit if you want a low-complexity game, consistent modern miniature designs across every faction, or a dice-light experience. Before choosing a starting point, weigh these practical questions:
- Rules: Are you willing to learn a detailed rank-and-file system and accept that important rolls can alter a battle?
- Army: Are the faction and models you want currently available in your region?
- Miniature style: Are you happy with a range that includes older kits alongside newer designs?
- Starter contents: Do you want both Warriors of Chaos and Grand Cathay, plus the included books and play aids?
For a new player who wants those two armies, the reviewed Core Set bundles a convenient two-player entry point. For a returning player with miniatures already assembled, the relevant rules and faction books may be a better match. Either way, consult Games Workshop’s current downloads page for applicable FAQs and errata before playing.
