The game was Diablo IV. In November 2024, a third-party leaderboard listed Elon Musk at No. 19 for a timed clear of the Pit 150 endgame dungeon. That was a dated leaderboard position—not an official, permanent ranking of the world’s players—and the spot had changed by the next day.
What game was Elon Musk ranked in?
It was Diablo IV, Blizzard’s dark-fantasy action RPG. Blizzard’s official game page describes the game and its current base-game and expansion offerings; those present-day offerings are separate from the 2024 leaderboard report.

What did the top-20 ranking measure?
The placement came from Helltides, a third-party leaderboard tracking submitted clear times for the Pit, a difficult endgame dungeon in Diablo IV. PC Gamer reported on November 5, 2024, that Musk had cleared Pit 150 in 2:45 and was listed at No. 19. The board was based on submitted entries, so it was not necessarily a complete record of every player’s runs. It was not a Blizzard-issued global ranking across the entire player base. PC Gamer’s November 5 report describes the leaderboard and the reported time.
How long did the ranking last?
Not long, at least in the published snapshots. Forbes reported on November 6, 2024, that Musk had fallen to No. 22. The January 19, 2025, article that used the “joins the ranks” framing also described him as No. 22 at publication. Those reports show that the position changed; they do not establish his current rank. Forbes’ updated report and The Daily Galaxy’s January 2025 article give the later snapshots.

What does the ranking say about Musk’s play?
A leaderboard entry can support a claim about a reported time and placement on that board. By itself, it cannot establish that a run was unaided or prove a permanent standing among all players.
That distinction matters in light of later reporting. The Washington Post’s January 29, 2025 investigation reported that Musk admitted paying to boost online game accounts, discussing Diablo IV and Path of Exile 2 in the broader account-boosting controversy. The report is relevant context, but it does not, on the evidence cited here, establish exactly who performed the specific Pit 150 run or what assistance, if any, applied to it. The Washington Post’s investigation provides that later context.
