Moonveil drops from the Magma Wyrm at the end of Gael Tunnel in Caelid. To wield it, you need 12 Strength, 18 Dexterity and 23 Intelligence. Meet those requirements, then prioritize Intelligence for a skill-focused build while keeping enough Vigor, Mind and Endurance for your survivability, FP use and equipment load.
How to get Moonveil
- Travel to Gael Tunnel in Caelid and explore the tunnel to reach its boss encounter.
- Defeat the Magma Wyrm. It drops Moonveil; the cited item references describe the drop as guaranteed.
The fight’s difficulty depends on your character’s progression and skill, so the weapon is not necessarily an early or easy pickup.

Moonveil deals physical and magic damage and scales with Intelligence. Its unique skill, Transient Moonlight, cannot be replaced with an Ash of War or affinity, so your build choices focus on attributes, weapon upgrades, talismans, armor and any supporting sorceries.
How to build around Moonveil
Meet the wielding requirements first
Reach 12 Strength, 18 Dexterity and 23 Intelligence before investing in other offensive targets for Moonveil. After that, Intelligence is the central offensive stat for a general build that makes frequent use of Transient Moonlight, a magic attack.

Balance damage with survival and FP
- Vigor: Invest enough to survive the encounters you are taking on; there is no single appropriate target for every character or mode.
- Mind: Raise it according to how often you use Transient Moonlight and whether you also cast sorceries.
- Endurance: Add what you need for stamina and the equipment load of your chosen armor.
- Dexterity: Keep the requirement, then weigh further investment against your priorities for Intelligence, durability and FP.
There is no established universal level-by-level allocation here. A sensible distribution changes with starting class, character level, PvE or PvP play, and whether you rely on the skill, ordinary katana attacks or sorcery support.
Using Transient Moonlight
Transient Moonlight has two follow-ups: the light attack produces a horizontal wave and costs 15 FP; the heavy attack produces a vertical wave and costs 20 FP. Choose the horizontal attack when its faster attack profile suits the opening, or the vertical wave when its reach or attack profile fits better. Neither is established as the best option for every enemy or situation.

Upgrade Moonveil and choose supporting gear
Upgrade the katana with Somber Smithing Stones along its path to +10. Since its skill and affinity are fixed, you cannot customize it by swapping in an Ash of War; instead, tune your attributes and supporting equipment to how you play. No particular talisman combination is established as a current best setup, and there is no supported patch-specific damage ranking to rely on.
