Black Ops Royale is a free-to-play Battle Royale mode in Call of Duty: Warzone, inspired by Blackout. It launched at 9 p.m. Pacific on March 12, 2026—midnight Eastern on March 13. Matches take place on Avalon, with 100 players in 25 squads of four, according to Call of Duty’s official deep dive.
When did Black Ops Royale launch?
Activision’s official deep dive lists the launch as Thursday, March 12, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT, equivalent to Friday, March 13, at 12 a.m. ET. The March 13 date is the East Coast calendar date for the same launch moment, not a later release. Xbox Wire reported the mode available on March 13, 2026. Those announcements establish the launch, but not whether Black Ops Royale is in Warzone’s active playlist on October 8, 2026. Playlists can change, so check the current in-game Warzone menu for availability.
Is Black Ops Royale free?
Yes. Activision described Black Ops Royale as a free-to-play mode within Call of Duty: Warzone. It is Warzone content, not a separately announced paid game. The official Season 02 Reloaded announcement confirms its free-to-play status.

How does a match work?
Drop into Avalon and scavenge
The announced launch format is 100 players divided into 25 four-person squads. Teams wingsuit onto Avalon, a large map first introduced as the Endgame map in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Players start with a wingsuit and limited equipment, then search for weapons, armor and other gear while the combat area shrinks.
Avalon includes dense city areas and interiors, open routes and long sightlines, waterways, and exposed sandy connections between some islands. Players can move on foot, swim, use land and water vehicles, and use Omnimovement—including wall-jumping—to navigate the terrain.

Build weapons during the match
Instead of dropping in with a Loadout, players find weapons and improve them as they loot. Weapon Archetypes provide preset builds; Attachment Kits increase a weapon’s rarity and advance its preset build. That makes the upgrade path different from collecting individual attachments.
Take optional risks for rewards
Announced activities include bounties, Strongboxes, Relays and Guild defenses. Cradle Breaches add red gas and hallucinated zombie hordes, with higher-tier loot that can include a Mangler Boss or Mystery Box. These are optional activities and hazards described by Activision, not guarantees about any particular match.

What happens after you are eliminated?
Black Ops Royale has no Gulag. The deep dive describes two ways to bring an eliminated teammate back: use a Redeploy Token found while scavenging, or have a teammate activate a Redeployment Tower. Teams therefore rely on finding a token or reaching a tower rather than winning a Gulag fight.

The available official comparison points to a scavenging-first format with no Loadouts, cash, Gulag or Buy Stations. The sources establish these rules, but do not show that either mode is more balanced, competitive or enjoyable. Players who prefer building a kit from match loot may find Black Ops Royale’s announced approach more appealing; those wanting another experience should compare the current in-game mode descriptions.

Why did Call of Duty bring back a Blackout-inspired format?
In a March 13, 2026 Xbox Wire interview, Call of Duty: Warzone Game Director Pete Actipis said, “It’s been over six years since Blackout originally launched,” and that “there was something pure about the Blackout experience.” He said the team wanted a new Warzone experience rooted in Call of Duty’s first Battle Royale.
