What changed in Dota 2 patch 7.38?
Valve described Wandering Waters as a map-and-systems update as well as a balance patch. The central river was remade and widened, Madstone was added as a resource for crafting unique neutral items, and Wisdom Runes were replaced with Wisdom Shrines. The announcement also mentioned other map updates and quality-of-life changes. Valve’s February 18, 2025 update announcement is the primary source for those headline changes.
How does the Wandering Waters river work?
Valve said the river’s current can speed movement. It also described evolving amphibious creeps that can drastically slow a hero by killing them. The announcement does not quantify movement bonuses or specify a universal route advantage, so the strategic implication should be treated as analysis rather than a measured result.
Why the river could affect rotations
A movement-enhancing current could make river routes more attractive for rotations, while the danger posed by amphibious creeps could make exposure there costly. That combination gives teams more reason to weigh route speed against risk when moving through the map; it does not establish that any particular lane or role gained an advantage.

What is Madstone used for?
Madstone is a resource players use to craft unique neutral items, according to Valve. That adds a crafting decision to neutral-item acquisition. The announcement does not, by itself, establish which crafted items were strongest or how much Madstone changed match outcomes.
What replaced Wisdom Runes?
Wisdom Shrines replaced Wisdom Runes in 7.38. This changed the map’s experience-resource structure. The announcement confirms the replacement, but it is not enough to quantify how experience distribution changed between teams, lanes or roles.

Did patch 7.38 flip the Dota 2 meta?
The update changed strategic incentives, but “flipped the meta” is stronger than the available evidence supports. Establishing a broad meta shift would require comparable data from before and after the patch, ideally separated by matchmaking bracket, role or lane, and professional play. The cited statistics do not provide that comparison.
Dotacoach’s 7.38c table lists Pudge at a 27.3% pick rate, Lion at 26.3%, Sniper at 21.1%, and Wraith King at a 57.8% win rate. These are figures from a third-party table, not Valve statistics. The cited data does not establish the rank, region, role, sample size or observation window, and it cannot show that the river, Madstone or Wisdom Shrines caused those results. Dotacoach’s hero statistics should therefore be read as a limited patch snapshot, not proof of a universal meta flip.

How did the 7.38 patch cycle continue?
Valve’s Steam archive records 7.38b on March 4, 2025, and 7.38c on March 27, 2025. The 7.38c announcement added a missing line to the original notes clarifying that Roshan no longer drops Aghanim’s Blessing. For exact rules at a particular point in the patch cycle, consult the relevant official notes rather than assuming the initial announcement captures every later clarification.
The current context has also moved on: the Dota 2 Pro Tracker page identified patch 7.41f as its data patch when accessed for this article.
