1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your Call of Duty account is in what players call a “shadow ban,” Activision calls the status limited matchmaking. Activision says that status cannot be appealed. Check your account’s status through the official Ban Appeal page periodically; if you find unauthorized account changes, secure the account and use Hacked Account Recovery. Activision does not publish a fixed clearance time or a guaranteed way to remove the restriction yourself.
How to check whether your COD account has limited matchmaking
- Go to Activision’s Ban Appeal page and sign in to the account you use for Call of Duty.
- Read the status shown for that account. The page can show no ban detected, limited matchmaking, a Ranked Play restriction, a temporary ban, or whether a permanent ban is eligible for appeal.
Use the status shown in your account rather than lobby behavior alone to identify the restriction. Activision’s current interface may report limited matchmaking, a Ranked Play restriction, or both.
What to do, depending on the status
If the status is limited matchmaking
Activision says limited matchmaking cannot be appealed. Its Ban Appeal guidance says temporary bans and accounts in limited matchmaking cannot be appealed; its Call of Duty Security and Enforcement Policy states that only permanent bans may be appealed. Check the status page periodically for a change. Activision says the account can leave limited matchmaking, return to it, or receive another penalty. A change out of the status is not a finding that the account has been cleared of potential violations.
Do not send repeated submissions or try to appeal through another channel: Activision says it will not respond to multiple submissions or appeals sent elsewhere.

If you see signs that someone accessed your account
Look for linked accounts you do not recognize or changes to your email address or Activision ID. If there is evidence of unauthorized access, secure the account and use Activision’s Hacked Account Recovery process. That workflow is for genuinely hacked accounts; Activision says requests for accounts that were not hacked will be closed and directs users to the relevant account-help or enforcement resource.
Activision’s account security resources cover two-factor authentication, account management, recovery, and enforcement status. Enable two-factor authentication where available and review account links and details.

If the page shows a permanent ban
A permanent ban is different from limited matchmaking: Activision says permanent bans may be appealed through the official Ban Appeal page. Activision says it reverses appeals only when it determines that the ban resulted from account hacking. Follow the appeal process for the status actually displayed; do not use the hacked-account workflow unless the account was compromised.
What limited matchmaking changes
Activision’s enforcement policy says an account in limited matchmaking may be placed in lobbies with other accounts in a similar state. Party members grouped with an affected player may also experience limited-matchmaking lobbies, and players in those lobbies may not earn progression. The policy applies to Call of Duty titles beginning with Modern Warfare (2019) and later console and PC titles; check the current status interface for applicability to your title.

How long does a COD shadow ban last?
Activision’s official pages do not give a fixed duration, an average clearance time, or a guaranteed manual removal method for limited matchmaking. Community timelines are not an official estimate. The supported action for this status is to check the official page periodically rather than assume a particular end date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will changing settings or account details remove it?
Activision’s published guidance does not identify changing hardware, network settings, identity, or account details as a way to clear limited matchmaking. Avoid treating such changes as a fix. Account changes are relevant when investigating a suspected compromise, not as a documented removal method for an enforcement status.
