No: the 2025 forecast that Half-Life 3 might be announced that year has expired, and Valve has not officially confirmed Half-Life 3 in the sources reviewed. The headline’s claim came from a report about insider Tyler McVicker, who said a rumored project called HLX was playable from beginning to end. The report itself called the proposed announcement and release timing guesswork.
Where the Half-Life 3 rumor came from
On May 5, 2025, Video Games Chronicle reported comments from Tyler McVicker, a YouTuber who follows Valve. McVicker claimed that a project reportedly codenamed HLX was playable from beginning to end and suggested it could be announced in 2025. VGC described the possible timing—an announcement in summer and a potential winter release—as guesswork, not confirmed Valve plans. VGC’s report
McVicker’s quoted description of playtesting was: “HLX is being playtested so religiously and so widely that there are individuals that will just talk,” as reported by VGC. That is an attributed claim about playtesting, not a statement from Valve or independent verification that the game is complete.
What happened to the “this year” prediction?
“This year” referred to 2025, the year of McVicker’s reported forecast. That window has passed. In November 2025, VideoGamer reported a separate claim by journalist Mike Straw that a source still expected an announcement in 2025, while noting that Straw could not corroborate the date with at least two other sources. Coverage published in 2026 described the 2025 expectation as elapsed and Half-Life 3 as still unannounced in those reports. Later rumors do not retroactively confirm an earlier prediction. The honest current framing is that insiders have made claims about a possible project, but Valve has not announced Half-Life 3 in the sources reviewed.
Is Half-Life 3 confirmed?
No official confirmation appears in the reviewed material. Valve’s public company information and its Half-Life: Alyx Steam announcements document the franchise and a released game; they do not confirm Half-Life 3, HLX, or the reported development details. This distinction matters: an insider report can be worth following, but it is not equivalent to a publisher announcement. “Playable end-to-end” is specifically McVicker’s reported claim; the reviewed sources do not independently establish the project’s status.
What does HLX mean?
HLX is the reported codename associated with the rumor. Valve has not publicly confirmed in the reviewed sources that HLX is the name of a Half-Life 3 project, so it should not be treated as an officially identified game. The codename and development details remain part of insider reporting.

How to read the competing claims
| Claim | Source and timing | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| HLX was reportedly playable from beginning to end; an announcement might come in 2025. | Tyler McVicker, reported by VGC on May 5, 2025. | Attributed insider claim. VGC called the timing guesswork; no Valve confirmation is cited. |
| A source still expected a 2025 announcement. | Mike Straw, reported by VideoGamer on November 20, 2025. | Separate source claim. Straw said he could not corroborate the date with at least two other sources. |
| The 2025 expectation had passed and the game remained unannounced in the coverage. | Secondary coverage in 2026. | Reporting on the elapsed forecast and continuing absence of an official announcement in those reports; not confirmation of development details. |
McVicker’s and Straw’s accounts are not interchangeable: they came at different times and carried different caveats. Neither turns a projected date into a confirmed release schedule.
