Dragon Age: The Veilguard is set in Thedas, where a newly created hero named Rook brings seven companions together to confront a threat involving two ancient gods. You can follow the game’s central setup without knowing every detail of the earlier games: start with who Rook is, how the companions and factions fit into Thedas, and why their quests matter.
What is Dragon Age: The Veilguard about?
In plain terms, The Veilguard is a single-player fantasy role-playing game about assembling a team to face a world-threatening crisis. Electronic Arts describes the setup this way: “When a pair of corrupt ancient gods break free from centuries of darkness, the vibrant land of Thedas needs someone they can count on.” The game follows Rook as that new hero, leading companions against the danger. EA’s official game page lists the release date as October 31, 2024, and the platforms as PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
Who is Rook?
Rook is the player-created protagonist, not a returning hero whose story you need to know in advance. Character setup lets you choose Rook’s lineage, combat class, faction, and backstory. EA’s standalone character creator can transfer a created Rook into the full game on the same platform.
The three combat classes are mage, rogue, and warrior. The official materials establish these as character-creation options, not a ranking of which class is best; choose based on the play style and roleplaying fantasy you want.

What are the factions, and why choose one?
Factions are groups rooted in different parts of Thedas. Your choice gives Rook a place in the world: EA says it affects Rook’s backstory and conversation options and may affect the balance of power. The six featured factions and their associated companions are:
| Faction | Beginner-friendly description | Associated companion |
|---|---|---|
| Grey Wardens | An ancient order sworn to fight darkspawn and monsters; EA says secret rites give Wardens supernatural powers. | Davrin |
| Veil Jumpers | Explorers of ancient elven ruins who confront Arlathan’s reality-warping magic. | Bellara |
| Shadow Dragons | A resistance opposing corrupt rulers and slavery in Tevinter. | Neve |
| Lords of Fortune | Rivaini explorers, hunters, and treasure-seekers known for daring exploits. | Taash |
| Mourn Watch | An elite necromantic order that tends Nevarra’s Grand Necropolis, a place inhabited by undead and spirits. | Emmrich |
| Antivan Crows | Assassins EA describes as Antiva’s shadowy protectors. | Lucanis |
These descriptions come from EA’s Meet the Factions page. Treat the faction choice as a roleplaying decision as well as a worldbuilding one: consider which group’s outlook and history suit the Rook you want to play, rather than assuming one is universally strongest.

Who are the seven companions?
Rook’s team has seven companions, each with an individual story, background, and abilities. EA’s companion announcement introduces the roster:
- Bellara: A Veil Jumper interested in uncovering ancient secrets.
- Davrin: A Grey Warden and monster hunter.
- Emmrich: A Mourn Watch necromancer accompanied by his skeletal assistant, Manfred.
- Harding: A dwarven scout returning from Dragon Age: Inquisition; EA also notes that she has unexpected magical powers.
- Lucanis: A pragmatic assassin connected to the House of Crows.
- Neve: A private detective and Shadow Dragon who opposes Tevinter’s corrupt rulers.
- Taash: A dragon hunter allied with the Lords of Fortune.
Harding is the returning Inquisition hero among the seven; EA’s faction descriptions associate the other six companions with the factions above. The official game page also identifies Solas and Varric as returning figures, but its introductory material is not a complete account of their histories.

Do you need to know the earlier Dragon Age games?
The official introductory material gives new players a clear starting point: Rook is a new protagonist, and the central setup is a team facing the release of two ancient gods. It also signals that some characters, including Harding, Solas, and Varric, have ties to earlier entries. Those pages do not provide a full series chronology or enough detail to explain every returning character’s past. If you want that context, a dedicated spoiler-aware recap of earlier games will be more useful than trying to infer the whole history from the premise.

Exploration expands after the prologue, rather than opening every area at once. EA’s beginner guide names Treviso and the Hossberg Wetlands as examples of areas that become explorable. It also recommends companion quests and side content because they directly affect how later stages unfold.

In its launch-day guide, the Dragon Age Team put the point plainly: “We encourage you to complete side content and companion quests, as they will have a direct impact on how the later stages of the game unfold.” You can use that guidance as a practical priority: explore newly available areas and make time for companion stories as they appear. EA’s beginner tips were published October 31, 2024.
