Dragon Age: The Veilguard has seven companions, each with a distinct faction, personal storyline and combat role. This ranking weighs how distinctive each character’s premise is, the narrative and thematic potential it suggests, the clarity of their identity and relationships, and how well their gameplay role fits that identity. It is an editorial ranking—not an official verdict or a measure of combat strength.
How this ranking works
BioWare presents The Veilguard as a character-driven RPG with romanceable companions and tactical combat. You can pause action to issue commands, use abilities and combine attacks; companion abilities can also be changed outside combat. Since party utility depends on your build and tactics, this list ranks the characters as concepts rather than naming a universally strongest party member. Companion quests and other side content matter to later story progression, so an introductory premise is not the whole of a character’s arc.
The official roster consists of Bellara, Davrin, Emmrich, Harding, Lucanis, Neve and Taash. Rook is the player character, not a companion in this ranking; Solas and Varric should likewise not be counted among these seven. The profiles below draw on the official descriptions from EA, PlayStation and BioWare. The order is a matter of editorial judgment, not a ranking published by the game’s makers.
The seven companions, ranked
1. Emmrich
Emmrich’s combination of Mourn Watch necromancer, Fade scholar and impeccably mannered academic gives him one of the roster’s most specific character hooks. His skeletal assistant, Manfred, makes that identity immediately legible without reducing it to a combat label. In battle, Emmrich can summon spirits to hinder foes or heal allies, tying his supernatural expertise to practical support. The contrast between scholarly composure and necromancy leaves plenty of room for character texture, which puts him first on this list.

2. Lucanis
Lucanis is an Antivan Crow assassin known as the Demon of Vyrantium, with a specialization in killing powerful mages. BioWare’s profile also gives him pressure from family expectations, a fear of disappointing loved ones and a tendency to focus on his work. That creates a useful tension between lethal professional purpose and the possibility of humor or vulnerability. His necrotic damage, buffs and healing make his combat role broader than the assassin label alone suggests.
3. Neve
Neve brings together two strong identities: private detective and member of the Tevinter Shadow Dragons. Her official profile describes a cynic who remains committed to a better future, a combination that gives her investigative role political as well as personal stakes. Ice magic, used to freeze or slow enemies, suits a controlled approach to combat. That fit between detective, reform-minded faction member and battlefield control makes her one of the roster’s clearest concepts.

4. Bellara
As a Veil Jumper focused on ancient Elvhenan, Bellara has a premise naturally connected to exploration and the game’s lore. Her official profile describes her as focused, creative and romantic. In combat, she manipulates the Fade, uses electricity and control magic, and helps allies while hindering enemies. That mix reinforces an identity built around curiosity and working with forces others may struggle to understand.
5. Davrin
Davrin is a Grey Warden, a monster hunter and a Dalish-raised warrior who cares for the young griffon Assan. The blend of forceful action and protectiveness gives him more than one dimension: he is tied to dangerous hunts, but also to the responsibility of caring for a vulnerable companion. His ability to protect allies supports that characterization in battle. The premise is strong, though less unusual than the top four on this particular set of criteria.

6. Harding
Harding returns from Dragon Age: Inquisition as a dwarven scout with a positive outlook, a bow and unexpected magical powers. That combination of continuity and surprise gives her a distinctive place in the roster, especially for players who know her from the previous game. Her arrows can stagger enemies and damage armor. She ranks lower here not because those details lack appeal, but because the premise is less immediately focused than the characters above her.
7. Taash
Taash is a Qunari dragon hunter aligned with the Lords of Fortune. The official profile emphasizes risk-taking, adventure and bluntness; dual axes and fire attacks carry that high-energy identity into combat. It is an easy role to understand and a welcome source of directness in a party full of complicated faction ties and mysteries. In this ranking, though, that clarity offers less thematic contrast than the other companions’ concepts.

Character ranking is not a party-building guide
The order reflects the character premises and how their identities connect to their roles, not a claim that Emmrich is always more useful than Taash or that any one companion is required for success. The game lets you choose whom to bring and use complementary abilities, so the best fit for a given encounter depends on Rook’s build and preferred tactics. You can adjust companion abilities outside combat, then use the tactical ability wheel to issue commands and combine actions during fights.
There is also more to each companion than the premise that introduces them. EA encourages players to explore side content and companion quests because they directly affect later stages of the game, and PlayStation notes that choices in companion stories shape their development and may unlock powerful abilities. Players who care most about a particular faction, relationship or quest arc may reasonably prefer a different order.
