A PS4 DUALSHOCK 4 controller takes about two hours to charge from empty, according to Sony. That is an approximate full-charge estimate, not a guaranteed time; Sony does not publish a separate schedule for partly charged batteries or compare charging speeds across power sources.
How to charge a DUALSHOCK 4
Using the PS4
Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable. Sony says it can charge while the PS4 is on or in rest mode. The estimate of about two hours applies when the battery has no remaining charge; a partial charge should take less time, but Sony does not specify how much less.
Charging in rest mode
For USB charging while the PS4 is in rest mode, open Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Supply Power to USB Ports. During rest-mode charging, the light bar slowly blinks orange and turns off when charging is complete. See Sony’s instructions for charging accessories on PlayStation consoles.
Using a charging station
The official CUH-ZDC1 E charging-station manual also gives an approximate two-hour time from empty. Align the station’s connector with the controller’s extension port and press the controller down until it clicks. Its light bar blinks orange while charging and turns off when charging finishes. Sony does not say that the station charges faster than a USB connection.

Using a computer or another USB device
Sony says a computer or another USB device may be used with a USB-standard-compliant cable, but warns that some devices may not charge the controller. If charging does not start, use the PS4 or try another compatible USB power source rather than assuming every USB port will work. Sony identifies the bundled DUALSHOCK 4 cable as micro-USB; check the connector and compatibility when replacing a cable.
How to check whether it is charging
Hold the controller’s PS button to open the Quick Menu and view the battery icon; Sony says the icon blinks while the controller charges. In rest mode, the slowly blinking orange light bar is another charging signal, and it switches off when charging is complete.

What can affect charging
Sony recommends charging between 10 °C and 30 °C and notes that charging may be less effective outside that range. The controller manual also says battery duration decreases with repeated use and age and varies with storage, use, and environmental conditions. Sony does not quantify how these factors change charging time, so the two-hour figure should not be adjusted by a specific amount.
If the controller will not charge
- Check that the USB cable is connected securely and that the power source is supplying USB power. For rest mode, verify Supply Power to USB Ports is enabled in the PS4 settings.
- Try a different compatible USB cable or a different power source; some USB devices may not charge the controller.
- If it still does not charge properly, follow Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 reset instructions. If the issue continues after resetting, Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs.
What Sony’s two-hour estimate means
Sony’s current support guidance describes about two hours for a battery with no remaining charge. Sony’s 2013 North American FAQ and its charging-station manual give the same approximate figure. These are Sony estimates, not a precise timing guarantee or an independent test; the sources do not provide a tolerance, partial-charge timetable, or speed comparison among console, computer, and station charging.
