These nine picks span medieval role-playing, strategy, and narrative history; they are a useful shortlist, not a measured ranking of accuracy.
How to judge historical accuracy in a game
“Historically accurate” can refer to different things: architecture and material culture, major events and people, ordinary life, or the quality of historical context available to players. A game may be convincing in one area and fictionalized in another. GameSpot’s analysis of historical games notes the tension between authenticity and playability; developers often aim for a believable period experience rather than a perfect reconstruction. GameSpot’s discussion of historical accuracy also highlights how representation and design choices can be contested.

For that reason, this list favors games with a clearly identifiable historical setting and a specific basis for recommending them, such as an in-game reference guide, a dedicated learning mode, or documented participation by historians. A developer’s account of its research is evidence that research took place, not independent proof that every detail is correct.
Best historically accurate games to try
1. Kingdom Come: Deliverance — best for medieval context within an RPG
Set in medieval Bohemia, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a strong choice for players who want historical information alongside role-playing. Its in-game Codex covers historical events, medieval society, and daily life. Xbox Wire reported that it contains well over one hundred topics, making it more than a passing collection of setting notes. Xbox Wire’s feature on the game describes that historical focus.
#1 Best Overall
- True to the Original
- Striking Art Direction and Score
- Respectful Representation
- Officially Licensed & Supported
- Deluxe Edition Content: Full game, Cowboys & Critters DLC, 3 art cards, Reversible coversheet
The Codex makes the game especially useful for readers who want context while playing, but it does not turn the RPG’s story and mechanics into documentary history.
2. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II — best for a researched 15th-century setting
The sequel returns to Bohemia in the 15th century. Xbox Wire describes its recreation as a blend of historical research and artistic interpretation. That is a useful way to approach it: the setting is informed by research, while the finished game remains a designed, playable world rather than a literal record of the past. Xbox Wire’s account of the sequel’s historical approach explains that balance.
Choose it if you want a current-generation medieval RPG and a researched setting; do not assume every event or gameplay system is a historical reconstruction.

3. Assassin’s Creed Origins / Discovery Tour: Ancient Egypt — best for guided learning about Egypt
For history-first exploration, look specifically for Discovery Tour: Ancient Egypt, rather than treating the entire action game as a lesson. The mode removes combat and offers guided tours through the game’s Ancient Egyptian landscape. Ubisoft says historians and external specialists contributed to the experience. In an interview, franchise historian Maxime Durand said five or six historians and Egyptologists wrote the tour content. Ubisoft’s Discovery Tour page describes the experiences, while Durand’s interview discusses the Ancient Egypt content.

4. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey / Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece — best for guided exploration of Greece
Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece focuses on guided exploration of Classical Greece and historical figures. Ubisoft says external period specialists supported the experience and that historians and experts curated its tours. It is the clearest fit for players who want structured, guided learning in the world associated with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

- History inspired real time strategy game
- four playable Nations in an extensive single player campaign
- various modes of intense multiplayer battles
- advanced tactical options combining the use of terrain, experience, and morale
- cinematic battle camera view that puts you right in the centre of the action.outstanding visual fidelity powered by Unreal Engine 4.streamlined resource management and village construction
Keep the recommendation attached to the Discovery Tour: the base game is an action-adventure, not a wholly factual account of ancient history. Ubisoft’s Discovery Tour overview distinguishes the educational experiences from their parent games.
5. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla / Discovery Tour: Viking Age — best for a guided look at Viking and Anglo-Saxon life
Discovery Tour: Viking Age presents guided discovery of Viking and Anglo-Saxon life in the ninth century. Ubisoft offers it as a mode in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and as a standalone product on several platforms. The learning experience is a better recommendation for historical exploration than the game’s full narrative, which should not be treated as uniformly factual. Check Ubisoft’s Discovery Tour page for the current mode and standalone options.

6. Assassin’s Creed Mirage / Discovery Tour: Medieval Baghdad — best for an educational urban-history companion
Ubisoft describes Discovery Tour: Medieval Baghdad as a free mobile experience built around the game’s recreation of ninth-century Baghdad. It includes Codex entries, interactions, and mini-games, offering a more explicitly educational way to explore the setting than relying on the action game alone. Availability details can differ by experience, so consult the official Discovery Tour page before choosing a platform.
7. Rome: Total War — best for historical strategy
Rome: Total War is a notable pick for players drawn to strategy games set in the ancient world. GameSpot includes it among iconic historical games while emphasizing the difficulty of achieving accuracy in complex games. That supports its place as a historical-setting strategy recommendation, not a claim that its campaigns or systems reproduce Roman history exactly. GameSpot’s historical-accuracy discussion provides the broader context.
8. Attentat 1942 — best for a narrative approach with historian involvement
A 2024 academic article on historical consulting identifies Attentat 1942 as a game in which university staff and expert historians played major creative roles. That makes it a worthwhile candidate for readers interested in history-focused narrative games and expert participation in development. The evidence here supports that creative-process point, not specific claims about the game’s historical episodes or mechanics. See Mochocki and Kot’s article in Homo Ludens, 1(17), 2024: the article on historical consulting.
9. Svoboda 1945: Liberation — another narrative-history candidate
The same 2024 academic article names Svoboda 1945: Liberation alongside Attentat 1942 as a title where university staff and expert historians had major creative roles. It is a reasonable choice for readers exploring narrative games shaped by historical expertise. Current platform availability and detailed historical claims are not established here, so check the game’s own current materials before buying or relying on it for a specific topic. Mochocki and Kot’s article supports the point about historian involvement.

Why even researched games take liberties
Historical games have to turn incomplete evidence into places, characters, rules, and events that players can interact with. The further back a setting goes, the less complete the surviving record may be. Ubisoft executive Deborah Papiernik described history as “a fantastic playground,” while noting that the past is not fully known and that less is documented the further back one goes. That uncertainty is one reason a plausible reconstruction should not be mistaken for settled fact.
Games also make choices for recognition, movement, and playability. Ubisoft has explained, for example, that Assassin’s Creed Unity used a later design of Notre-Dame to preserve recognizability and parkour opportunities. Such a choice may serve the game, but it is not the same as a historically exact depiction. Treat developer explanations as explanations of design decisions, not as consensus among historians or affected communities. Ubisoft’s interview on historical immersion and preservation discusses the franchise’s relationship with historical interpretation.
Quick Recap
How to choose a historically informed game
- Decide whether you want to play or study. A dedicated Discovery Tour is designed for guided exploration; an RPG or strategy game puts entertainment and systems first.
- Look for the kind of evidence that matters to you. A Codex, guided tour, or documented historian involvement offers a different kind of support than a studio’s broad claim of research.
- Separate the setting from the plot. A game can evoke a real place and period while inventing characters, compressing events, or changing details for gameplay.
- Check the version and platform. Discovery Tour availability differs by experience, and current standalone or bundled options should be confirmed on Ubisoft’s page or the relevant store.
- Use a game as a starting point, not the final authority. Historical interpretation can be incomplete or disputed; consult reliable historical sources when a specific detail matters.
