Legacy of Atlantis is currently scheduled for February 12, 2027. Catalyst was announced for 2027, but a later 2028 window has only been suggested in an executive comment and is not formally confirmed.
What are the two new Tomb Raider games?
Amazon Game Studios and Crystal Dynamics announced both projects at The Game Awards on December 11, 2025. They are being developed in Unreal Engine 5, and Alix Wilton Regan was named as Lara Croft’s voice performer in both.
| Game | What it is | Setting and structure | Release information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis | A reimagining of the 1996 original, co-developed by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog | Revisits Lara’s debut, with redesigned environments, puzzles, and new surprises | February 12, 2027; PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2, according to the current official publisher page |
| Tomb Raider: Catalyst | An original adventure developed by Crystal Dynamics | Northern India, after a mythical cataclysm; its reveal describes a large, vertically layered world | Announced for 2027; a 2028 follow-up window was suggested by an executive comment but not confirmed by Amazon’s reported response |
Is Legacy of Atlantis a remake?
“Remake” is a reasonable shorthand for Legacy of Atlantis, but Crystal Dynamics and Amazon describe it as a “true reimagining,” not a straight port. The project returns to the story and atmosphere of Lara Croft’s 1996 debut while rebuilding the experience with modern gameplay mechanics, redesigned puzzles, and new visual and sound design.
The changes affect how locations are explored, too. The official PlayStation Blog describes the Peru environments as semi-connected spaces rather than a sequence of self-contained rooms. Players can expect new routes, secrets, collectibles, and resources. A cog puzzle from the original is among the elements being reworked. These are announced design details, not a basis for judging the finished game before release.

What is Catalyst about?
Tomb Raider: Catalyst is not a remake or a retelling of the 1996 game. It is a new chapter in Lara’s story, set in Northern India after a mythical cataclysm brings ancient secrets and mysterious guardian forces to the surface. Lara encounters rival treasure hunters and must decide whom to trust.
The reveal describes a world spanning wilderness, mountains, deserts, jungles, and ruins, with vertically layered areas, tomb exploration, puzzles, and adventure technology. The publisher calls it the largest Tomb Raider world yet; that is a publisher description, not an independently measured comparison.

When will the games release?
Legacy of Atlantis: February 12, 2027
The current official Tomb Raider page lists Legacy of Atlantis for February 12, 2027. Its earlier 2026 window is outdated. The publisher lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2 as platforms.
Catalyst: timing remains unconfirmed
Catalyst was announced for 2027. In July 2026, Amazon Games chief Jeffrey Gattis was quoted referring to Legacy of Atlantis arriving in February 2027 and “then we’ll follow on in 2028 with the next one.” When Gematsu asked about the timing, an Amazon Games representative said, “We don’t have anything new to share about Catalyst‘s timing,” and said the game was progressing well. The 2028 remark points to a possible later release, but it is not an official date update.

Who is making the games?
Crystal Dynamics is developing Catalyst and co-developing Legacy of Atlantis with Flying Wild Hog. Both projects use Unreal Engine 5, and Alix Wilton Regan is the announced voice performer for Lara in each. Crystal Dynamics’ Noah Hughes described the work as an opportunity to “inherit and expand upon” the franchise’s legacy; studio head Scot Amos called the collaboration with Amazon Game Studios “truly transformative.” Those are the developers’ own descriptions of the projects.
What the announcement means for Tomb Raider
The two games serve different purposes: Legacy of Atlantis returns to the series’ first adventure with substantial redesign, while Catalyst moves Lara into a new story and setting. The 2026 announcement also marked the franchise’s 30th anniversary. For now, the clearest firm scheduling information is Legacy of Atlantis’s February 12, 2027 date; Catalyst’s later timing remains unresolved.
