Tokyo Xanadu eX+ looks like a strong fit for players seeking a single-player action RPG with fast, team-based combat, a character-focused story, and the extra material of an enhanced edition. Its reception is favorable, though critics have also questioned whether its lengthy quest sustains its momentum and thematic depth. If you want a definitive verdict based on first-hand play, note that the sources cited here establish features and reception, not independent gameplay testing.
Is Tokyo Xanadu eX+ good?
The available reception points to a broadly well-liked action RPG, rather than an essential pick for every player. Metacritic listed a 75/100 critic Metascore from 16 reviews and a 7.7/10 user score from 81 ratings in a 2026 retrieval. Steam showed “Very Positive,” with 86% positive from 1,330 user reviews in a 2026 retrieval. These are dated snapshots: Metacritic aggregates only the reviews and ratings it includes, while Steam’s totals and percentage can change.
Critic excerpts lean toward praise for the fast, party-based combat, soundtrack, setting, and material added in the enhanced release. The main reservation in those excerpts is that the long quest can be hard to stay invested in and may not offer enough thematic depth. Those are patterns in the cited excerpts, not a claim that every reviewer reached the same judgment. Check the Metacritic game page and Steam listing for current figures.
What kind of game is Tokyo Xanadu eX+?
Tokyo Xanadu eX+ is a single-player action RPG from Nihon Falcom, published by Aksys Games on Steam. Its structure combines a story-led adventure with hack-and-slash-style dungeon action. That makes it a different proposition from a turn-based RPG: expect real-time fighting and party-based play alongside the narrative.

For players weighing whether to start it, the central trade-off is between action variety and story pacing. The critical excerpts describe combat and the world favorably, but also point to the challenge of sustaining interest through a long quest. Players who enjoy substantial dialogue and character-focused adventures may be more receptive than those looking for a short, relentlessly paced action game.
How does the combat and story hold up?
Combat: fast, team-based action
Combat is a key part of the game’s appeal in the available reviews. Critics highlighted its fast pace and team-based action. Party switching gives the combat a different texture from an action RPG built around a lone fighter, though the supplied sources do not establish how much the encounters evolve over the full adventure or provide hands-on testing of their repetition.

Story: appealing setting, uneven momentum
The setting and world drew positive notice, but praise for a world does not necessarily mean the plot keeps the same momentum throughout. The critical excerpts include concern that the long quest may become difficult to stay invested in and could have greater thematic depth. If narrative pacing and thematic complexity are your main criteria, treat those as legitimate caveats rather than assuming the favorable aggregate scores settle the question.

Those claims describe the Steam edition’s positioning; they do not prove that every platform version has identical content or performance. Before choosing a console or PC release, check the exact edition’s official regional storefront for included content, localization, and performance information.
Which version should you choose?
The sources identify a PC release on Steam and a PlayStation 4 edition in Metacritic’s platform context. A secondary release listing also mentions Nintendo Switch, but that alone does not establish current regional availability, a physical cartridge, or stock. The available evidence does not support a reliable platform-by-platform performance comparison or current price ranking.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who is Tokyo Xanadu eX+ for?
Consider it if you want a story-driven, single-player action RPG and enjoy real-time, party-based combat. It is a less certain fit if you need a tightly paced story or especially deep themes to carry a lengthy adventure. The positive reception supports giving it a look; the pacing reservation is the most important qualification for players whose interest depends primarily on narrative momentum.
