Nintendo says the Welcome Version demo of Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream can be completed, but its official listing does not explain the exact gameplay sequence that brings it to an end. The “stopping people from playing indefinitely” idea is best read as a joke about a progression-limited demo—not a documented timer or timed lockout. You can create up to three Mii characters, and Nintendo says your demo save data carries into the full game if you buy it.
What Nintendo confirms about the demo
Nintendo’s product listing says players can complete the Welcome Version demo, create up to three Mii characters, and receive a Hamster Costume for completing it. Nintendo also says demo save data transfers to the full game upon purchase.
The costume is a bonus, not an exclusive item: Nintendo says it can also be obtained through regular play in the main game.
How does the demo stop you from playing indefinitely?
The official listing establishes that the demo has an endpoint, but does not identify the specific event or sequence that triggers it. It also does not provide a definitive list of activities that remain available afterward. So the supported answer is that the demo is completable and progression-limited; the precise way that limit plays out is not documented on the official page.
#1 Best Overall
- Populate your island with Mii characters and watch them come to life
- Base your Mii characters on family and friends, or whatever you want—and customizer, including some face customization options you haven’t seen before
- Pick your Mii characters up and place them near each other to chat and hang out
- Help your Mii characters explore likes and dislikes, find relationships, and get up to all sorts of fun
- Give Mii characters clothes, food, items, and life advice as they deal with all kinds of situations
That distinction matters: Nintendo’s published information does not describe a clock that cuts off play after a set number of hours. Community explanations or anecdotal workarounds should not be treated as Nintendo-confirmed mechanics.
What happens to your island if you buy the full game?
Nintendo says the Welcome Version save data carries over to the retail game upon purchase. That makes the demo a way to begin an island you can continue in the main game, rather than a separate save that must necessarily be abandoned.

If you are deciding whether to move on, the practical questions are whether you want to keep developing that island and whether you want to continue beyond the demo’s endpoint. The Hamster Costume alone need not decide it, since Nintendo says it is also available through regular play in the full game.
A separate issue: a post-demo-end software crash
Nintendo Support documented a software-closing issue that could occur after reaching the demo’s end when the software was launched or resumed from sleep between 9:00 PM and 10:00 AM. Nintendo says an update resolved that issue. In its support article, Nintendo stated: “Save data was not affected, and there is no problem transferring data to the retail version.” That statement concerns the identified issue; it is not a general guarantee about every possible transfer scenario.

This crash was a specific software problem, not the intended mechanism for ending demo progression.

Nintendo describes the main game as supporting TV, tabletop, and handheld play. Its product information cautions that software compatibility and play experience may differ on Nintendo Switch Lite. Nintendo’s Australia FAQ also discusses Switch 2 handheld play; those platform details do not change what is established about the demo’s endpoint.
