Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, the new Tomodachi Life game announced by Nintendo in 2025, launched on April 16, 2026. It is listed for Nintendo Switch and is also playable on Nintendo Switch 2. Players create Mii characters, shape an island for them, and watch—or influence—their day-to-day lives. A free demo is available.
What is the new Tomodachi Life game called?
The sequel is titled Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. Nintendo announced it during its March 27, 2025 Nintendo Direct, describing it as the first brand-new entry in the series in over ten years and initially giving it a 2026 release window. Nintendo later confirmed the April 16, 2026 launch date. Nintendo’s January 2026 launch announcement and US product listing now show the game as released.
The original announcement’s 2026 window is no longer the latest status: the game is out. Nintendo’s March 27, 2025 announcement provides the earlier context.
What do you do in Living the Dream?
You make Mii characters based on yourself, family, friends, or wholly original ideas, then follow their lives on an island. Nintendo describes creating Miis from scratch or with guided help, assigning personalities and quirks, learning what they like, helping with their problems, and watching or encouraging relationships. The appeal is less about completing a conventional campaign and more about seeing what happens as the residents interact.

- Populate your island with Mii characters and watch them come to life
- Base your Mii characters on family and friends, or whatever you want—and customizer, including some face customization options you haven’t seen before
- Pick your Mii characters up and place them near each other to chat and hang out
- Help your Mii characters explore likes and dislikes, find relationships, and get up to all sorts of fun
- Give Mii characters clothes, food, items, and life advice as they deal with all kinds of situations
The island and its residents are both customizable. You can decorate and arrange the island, move buildings, and use Palette House to create things such as pets, food, clothing, buildings, and other items. Nintendo says the game’s time passes in step with real life, so residents’ stories continue when you return. As Nintendo put it in its January 29, 2026 announcement: “In this game, time passes the same way as the real world, so try and drop in on your Mii characters daily as they continue to live their best island lives!”
Which systems can play it?
Nintendo lists Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream for Nintendo Switch and says it is playable on Nintendo Switch 2. The US store page also lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play modes. These details establish compatibility; they do not mean the game is a separate Switch 2 edition.

- After over ten years, Tomodachi Life is back! Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream comes to Nintendo Switch on the 16th of April 2026.
- On a small island floating in the sea, Mii characters live their own carefree lives. You're in charge of this island, so create anyone you’d like to live here as Mii characters, like ones based on friends, family and even yourself.
- Then, choose their personality, voice, and help your Mii characters enjoy their island life however they see fit. You can see what’s on their minds, help them solve problems, watch them interact, cultivate their friendships and more.
For local sharing, Nintendo lists local wireless for two systems. Players can exchange some creations and Miis with nearby players. This is local play and sharing, not online multiplayer.
Is there a demo?
Yes. Nintendo’s US store listing offers a free demo in which you can create up to three Miis. If you buy the full game, your demo save data carries over. Completing the demo also unlocks a Hamster Costume, but it is not exclusive to the demo: Nintendo says it can also be obtained through regular play in the full game.
