When did Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream release?
Nintendo lists April 16, 2026, as the release date on its official game page. Nintendo’s May 8, 2026 investor release listing independently records the game as released on that date: Nintendo software sales data.
The game was announced in Nintendo of America’s March 27, 2025 Direct as coming to Nintendo Switch in 2026. Nintendo later described the island setting in September 2025, then confirmed the date and Switch 2 playability in its January 29, 2026 recap: Nintendo’s announcement recap.
What kind of game is it?
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is a new entry in Nintendo’s Mii-focused life-simulation series. Nintendo calls it the first new series entry in more than 10 years. Players create Miis based on people they know, themselves, or original characters, then customize their personalities and voices. The characters live together on an island, where players observe their relationships, daily activities, and problems rather than directing a conventional scripted adventure.

Players can create and customize Mii characters, including their personalities and voices. That lets the island’s residents reflect friends and family, or be entirely imagined characters.

Nintendo’s January 2026 overview highlighted island building and player-created items alongside expanded character customization. Those features give players ways to shape both the people who inhabit the island and the environment around them. Nintendo’s announcement does not establish detailed limits or tools for these systems, so specific creation options should be checked in the game itself.
Can you play it on the original Switch and Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo identifies it as a Nintendo Switch game and says it is playable on Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement confirms playability on both systems, but does not specify a separate Switch 2 edition. Regional price, physical cartridge availability, and current retailer inventory can vary and are not established by Nintendo’s announcement materials; check the local Nintendo store or retailer listing for those details.

Is there a demo or a current software update?
The announcement information does not establish whether a demo is currently available. Nintendo Support published a notice that a software update became available on July 22, 2026, but that notice alone does not establish the latest version today.
