These 10 classic first-person shooters are a curated tour of the genre’s early years, from the landmark corridor action of Wolfenstein 3D to the arena competition of Unreal Tournament. They are not a definitive ranking: each is worth playing for a different reason, whether you want fast combat, exploratory storytelling, multiplayer design, or a glimpse of how the FPS changed in the 1990s.

Which classic FPS should you play first?

Start with the style of play you want. For straightforward, fast action, choose DOOM. For a story-led campaign, try Half-Life. If you want competitive matches, Quake and Unreal Tournament offer two influential but distinct multiplayer perspectives. For a slower, more exploratory experience, pick System Shock 2.

The games below span the early 1990s through the end of the decade. Their value is not just historical: they offer different ways to play and remain useful reference points for understanding how first-person shooters developed.

10 classic shooters to play

1. Wolfenstein 3D

Wolfenstein 3D is an early landmark in the popularization of the first-person shooter, not the first FPS ever made. Its fast corridor combat established a template that id Software would refine before DOOM. Play it to see the genre in a relatively direct form: move through enclosed spaces, find keys, and fight your way forward. Xbox Wire’s FPS history and Gameranx’s 1990s FPS retrospective both treat it as a foundational milestone.

2. DOOM

DOOM is the essential next stop if you want to understand why the genre became so influential. It builds on the earlier template with faster, more varied level design, horror imagery, and combat that rewards movement as well as aim. Its deathmatches also made competitive multiplayer a prominent part of the FPS conversation. Xbox Wire describes it as a genre “killer app” and notes its influence on other shooters. The article’s succinct assessment of its successor captures the series’ broader impact: “Like Doom before it, Quake spawned a cultural shift.”

3. DOOM II

If DOOM’s combat is what you enjoy, DOOM II is the natural follow-up. It continues the same core style while shifting the conflict from Mars and Deimos to an invasion of Earth, giving the familiar run-and-gun formula a new setting. It is a useful choice for players who want more of the original approach rather than a major change in pace or genre. Gameranx discusses the setting shift in its 1990s FPS retrospective.

4. Duke Nukem 3D

Duke Nukem 3D stands out for personality and interaction with the world around you. Its city environments offer more than abstract corridors: surroundings can be engaged with, giving the spaces a different texture from many earlier shooters. The irreverent tone, varied urban settings, and LAN multiplayer make it a strong pick if you want a shooter with a more playful, lived-in feel. GameSpot’s retrospective on 1990s FPS games highlights how environmental interaction helped distinguish it.

5. Quake

Play Quake for the leap into fully polygonal 3D spaces. Its deeper, more vertical maps changed how players moved through a shooter, while mouse aiming and multiplayer helped shape the genre’s next phase. It is especially useful alongside Unreal Tournament: Quake shows how navigating 3D levels and aiming could define competitive play. Xbox Wire describes the shift from sprite-based worlds to polygonal 3D in its genre history. Bethesda’s official Quake page describes an enhanced version that includes official and fan-made mods.

6. GoldenEye 007

GoldenEye 007 is the console-focused counterpoint on this list. Its Nintendo 64 campaign combines mission variety with stealth elements, while split-screen multiplayer makes it a natural pick for local matches. It shows that console FPS design could make room for objectives and pacing beyond simply clearing rooms. Xbox Wire and GameSpot both use it to illustrate the evolution of console shooters; see the Xbox Wire history and GameSpot retrospective.

7. Half-Life

Choose Half-Life for a campaign that builds its story through events unfolding as you play. Scripted sequences and enemy tactics give the experience a stronger sense of progression than a string of disconnected arenas. Its engine also became fertile ground for mods, including influential spin-offs such as Counter-Strike. Xbox Wire connects the game’s narrative approach and mod culture, while GameSpot describes its unfolding events and opponents in its 1990s FPS retrospective.

8. System Shock 2

System Shock 2 is the pick for players who want an FPS that is also a survival-horror and RPG experience. Its ship setting encourages exploration, and character development, equipment, and audio logs give the journey more deliberation than a pure run-and-gun shooter. That hybrid design makes it the most distinct change of pace on this list: expect to explore and manage your progress, not just push through combat encounters. Xbox Wire describes its blend of FPS, horror, and RPG elements, and Gameranx covers its setting and systems in its 1990s FPS retrospective.

9. Unreal Tournament

Unreal Tournament is the multiplayer-first recommendation. Rather than approaching it as another story campaign, play it for fast arena competition and the distinct appeal of tightly focused matches. It makes a useful contrast with Quake: both are important multiplayer reference points, but Unreal Tournament is the clearest choice here if arena play is your priority. Xbox Wire notes its place alongside Counter-Strike in the early esports circuit in its FPS history.

10. Marathon

Marathon broadens the list beyond the PC and console examples most commonly associated with 1990s shooters. Xbox Wire describes it as an important early Macintosh FPS and one of the games that followed DOOM’s success. Play it as a platform-history pick: it shows that the genre’s development was not confined to the most familiar computer and console lineages. See Xbox Wire’s history of first-person shooters.

How to choose among these old-school shooters

What you want Start with Why
Fast, direct combat DOOM Its pace, level design, and combat are central to the classic run-and-gun style.
More of that classic formula DOOM II It follows DOOM with a new invasion-of-Earth setting.
Fully 3D spaces and multiplayer history Quake Its polygonal environments, vertical maps, and mouse aiming mark a major shift.
Local console matches and mission variety GoldenEye 007 It pairs split-screen play with stealth and varied objectives.
Story and scripted events Half-Life The campaign’s unfolding events and mod culture set it apart.
Exploration, horror, and RPG systems System Shock 2 It is the list’s clearest hybrid rather than a pure action shooter.
Arena competition Unreal Tournament Its focus is fast multiplayer, not a story campaign.
An early Macintosh perspective Marathon It adds a platform history often missed in PC- and console-centered lists.

Where to start if you have never played a classic FPS

For the most direct introduction, start with DOOM. If you prefer a campaign with a stronger narrative throughline, choose Half-Life. If you mainly want to understand how multiplayer shooters developed, play Quake and then Unreal Tournament. And if you want a game that bends the genre’s usual rules, begin with System Shock 2.

Availability depends on platform and edition, and current availability for all ten games is not established here. Bethesda’s official DOOM Anthology page describes a physical collector’s edition with classic DOOM games, a SteelBook case, and a five-inch BFG replica with lights and a stand; that product description does not establish that the games themselves are on physical discs.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
