If Hogwarts Legacy stutters or runs at low FPS on PC, first compare your hardware and settings with the game’s official targets, then change one variable at a time. The specifications are targets, not a promise of identical performance in every scene, and the available evidence does not establish a universal fix. These 12 checks help distinguish a settings or hardware limit from storage, driver, or compatibility issues.
1. Record a repeatable baseline
Before changing settings, note your resolution, graphics preset, approximate frame rate, and where the problem occurs. Revisit the same location under the same conditions after each change. This makes it easier to tell whether a tweak helped, had no measurable effect, or made performance worse.
2. Compare your PC with the official performance tiers
The game’s official PC specifications list different hardware targets for different resolutions and quality levels. They are useful comparison points, not guarantees for every scene:

3. Lower resolution temporarily
Reduce the display resolution for a controlled test, keeping other settings unchanged. If frame rate improves noticeably, graphics workload may be a limiting factor. If it barely changes, resolution alone may not explain the issue. Restore your original resolution if the test does not help.
4. Lower graphics quality for a controlled test
Try a lower preset or reduce one demanding graphics option at a time, recording the result. If the frame rate rises, the current graphics workload may exceed what your GPU can handle consistently. Avoid changing several settings together: that makes the result difficult to interpret.

5. Check memory and the rest of the system against the requirements
Steam’s system requirements listing gives 16 GB RAM and 85 GB storage for both its minimum and recommended PC tiers. Check your PC against the full requirements, not just these two figures. A listed requirement does not establish the cause of a particular stutter, but a shortfall is a reason to investigate system limits before trying undocumented tweaks.
6. Check whether the game is installed on an HDD
The official minimum/low tier prefers an SSD but supports an HDD; the higher listed tiers specify an SSD. If the game is on an HDD and you are considering an internal SSD for gaming PC, first confirm your system supports the drive and that the game can be moved or reinstalled there. An SSD is a reasonable conditional upgrade when storage is unsuitable, not a guaranteed stutter or FPS fix.

7. Confirm DirectX 12 is in use
PC patch-note text mirrored in a Steam community discussion states that DirectX 12 is required and warns that DX11 workarounds can cause stability problems. Do not use a DX11 launch flag as a performance fix. If you have added a launch option or workaround that forces DX11, remove it and test again. The surfaced patch-note page is a community mirror that points to official notes, rather than the official notes host itself.
8. Check driver notes for your exact GPU and version
Driver compatibility reports can be specific to a GPU model and driver release. AMD’s Adrenalin 23.4.3 notes documented water corruption on some AMD products, including RX 580, and said the company was working with the game developers. An Intel release-note result flags a DX12 cinematics issue. These are historical, version-specific examples; they do not show that either issue persists on current drivers. Read the current release notes for your exact GPU before changing drivers, and use the vendor’s official support page if a reported problem matches your setup.

9. Check for game updates
Patch-note text mirrored in a Steam community discussion describes improvements to shader compilation and a fix for an Nvidia-versus-AMD frame-rate issue. That shows PC performance has been addressed in game updates historically; it does not establish that a particular update will fix your current symptoms. Make sure the game is up to date before troubleshooting older behavior.

Repeat your baseline test in the same location after each adjustment. A change that appears to help in one area may not help elsewhere, so avoid drawing a broad conclusion from a single different scene. Keep a short note of the setting changed and the before-and-after result.

11. Undo changes that do not help
If a change produces no measurable improvement, restore the previous setting before moving on. Stacking tweaks makes it harder to identify the cause and to recover from new problems. Be especially cautious about registry edits, config-file changes, and undocumented launch options: the evidence here does not establish them as fixes.
