For most players, the best place to start is Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018), followed by Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. That Insomniac trilogy leads this ranking because it combines a connected story with modern web-swinging and distinct takes on Peter Parker and Miles Morales. The picks below are ranked editorially, weighing movement, story, combat, structure and how practical each game is to play now—not claiming there is one objectively correct order.

How this ranking works

This is a ranked guide to eight well-supported picks, not a definitive top 15. The available comparisons establish a strong shortlist but do not substantiate 15 individual entries and their placements well enough to present that number as fact. The order below balances what each game does distinctively with its appeal to players today. A classic that excels at a particular style of movement or storytelling may suit you better than a higher-ranked modern game.

Availability is clearest for the recent Insomniac games. Older titles can be harder to find, and current platform or edition availability for them is not established here; check your region and storefront before planning a playthrough.

What are the best Spider-Man games?

1. Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) — best starting point

Start here if you want a full-scale Spider-Man adventure with a strong Peter Parker story and a detailed recreation of New York. GamesRadar’s ranking praises the game’s characterization and city, and its place at the top of this list reflects how well those strengths introduce the modern series.

  • An evolution of the Spider-Man story: The incredible power of the symbiote forces Peter and Miles to face the ultimate test of strength, both inside and outside the mask, as they balance their lives, friendships, and their duty to protect those in need.
  • Experience two playable Spider-Men: Quickly swap between both Spider-Men as you explore an expanded Marvel’s New York. • Battle iconic Marvel Super Villains: Fight against a variety of new and iconic villains, including an original take on the monstrous Venom, the ruthless Kraven the Hunter, the volatile Lizard, and many more!

PlayStation’s series FAQ recommends this as the beginning of the connected story. It lists the Game of the Year Edition for PS4 and as playable on PS5, and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered for PS5 and PC. Both the Game of the Year Edition and Remastered include The City That Never Sleeps expansion.

2. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 — best for two playable heroes

Peter and Miles are both playable, with different abilities and fast switching between them. The story brings them together against threats including Venom, and the city expands into Queens and Brooklyn. The larger setting and dual-hero design make this the broadest of the three modern adventures in the comparisons here.

Sony’s October 2023 launch announcement also highlights PS5 features including Web Wings, DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Marvel lists the game as an action-adventure title developed by Insomniac Games, published by PlayStation, rated Teen and available on PS5 and PC. Sony reported more than 2.5 million copies sold in the first 24 hours after launch, calling it the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game in PlayStation history at that time; that is a dated launch figure, not a lifetime sales total.

  • Sony interactive entertainment, insomniac games, and Marvel have teamed up to create a brand-new and Authentic spider-man adventure

3. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales — best focused adventure

Miles gets a more compact, focused adventure than the mainline games. GamesRadar describes it as refining the series’ combat, stealth and web-slinging foundation. Its tighter scope makes it a good choice if you want the modern formula without the scale of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

PlayStation lists it for PS4, PS5 and PC. The Ultimate Edition includes Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. For the connected story, play it after Marvel’s Spider-Man: PlayStation’s FAQ says the events continue with Miles Morales, then reunite Peter and Miles in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 about nine months later.

4. Spider-Man 2 (2004) — best classic open-world swinging

This game’s lasting distinction is its open-world web-swinging, especially the sense of momentum as you move through the city. GamesRadar ranks it fourth and singles out that movement, while also noting that the game can feel dated. Its age and the difficulty of finding and playing it are practical drawbacks, so it is a better fit for curious players who specifically want to experience an influential take on traversal than for newcomers seeking the easiest entry point.

5. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions — best change of pace

Instead of one continuous open-world city, Shattered Dimensions uses a linear structure and four Spider-Man worlds. That makes it the sharpest structural contrast to the Insomniac games on this list. GamesRadar ranks it fifth. Activision’s 2010 announcement identifies Beenox as developer and names Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man Noir among the four worlds.

6. Ultimate Spider-Man — best comic-book look

For players drawn to comic-book art direction, Ultimate Spider-Man is a notable classic pick. GamesRadar includes it among its top seven and praises its visual style. That makes it worth considering for presentation and personality, even if your main priority is not a contemporary open-world campaign.

7. Spider-Man (2000) — best early 3D snapshot

The 2000 game earns its place for its early 3D presentation and personality, qualities GamesRadar highlights in its ranking. It is most appealing as a snapshot of how Spider-Man games approached the character and space at that point, rather than as a substitute for the more recent games’ scale or accessibility.

8. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows — best darker-toned combat contrast

Web of Shadows stands apart for its darker tone, player choices, dynamic events and web-striking mechanics, according to GameSpot’s ranking. It is a useful pick if you want a moodier action game rather than the character-focused, connected arc of the Insomniac trilogy. Its DS version differs substantially from the console versions, so the version matters when comparing what the game offers.

What order should you play the modern games in?

  1. Marvel’s Spider-Man — establishes Peter and the series’ story.
  2. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales — continues the story with Miles.
  3. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 — reunites Peter and Miles about nine months after the preceding game.

PlayStation says players can start at any point, but the plot spans all three games. Playing in release-story order gives the most context for the characters and their relationships.

Which game should you choose?

  • First Spider-Man game: Marvel’s Spider-Man, the official recommended starting point for the connected trilogy.
  • Peter and Miles together: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with both heroes playable and a larger New York.
  • A shorter modern adventure: Miles Morales, whose focused campaign refines the modern games’ core systems.
  • Classic web-swinging: Spider-Man 2 (2004), if you can find a way to play it.
  • A more linear, multi-world structure: Shattered Dimensions.
  • A darker action-game tone: Web of Shadows, with the caveat that the DS edition differs from console versions.
