These ten Steam games, all released or re-released in 2025, are lightly covered and undersold relative to how players respond to them. They are recommendations to explore, not a ranking of the best releases of the year. The list draws on PC Gamer’s January 2, 2026 roundup of 30 hidden gems, whose editors selected games that were lightly covered before their release, undersold despite strong user sentiment, and spread across genres. A Steam Community user summed up the reader need in a September 5, 2025 thread: “recommend some underrated indie games that deserve more attention.”
What “underrated” means in this list
“Underrated” is an editorial judgment, not a measurable statistic. No sales figures, review averages, or player counts stand behind these picks, so treat the selection as a starting point for your own browsing.
Two published standards are worth knowing. PC Gamer’s roundup, by Dominic Tarason, used the criteria described above. GameSpot’s “Hidden Gems 2025” feature, published December 19, 2025, used a different test: games released in the preceding year that were lesser-known and did not make GameSpot’s own top ten. Both are reasonable. This article follows PC Gamer’s standard, which puts more weight on coverage and audience attention than on critical consensus.
Steam curators work from a similar visibility-based idea. The curator “Underrated Games You Missed” describes its purpose as drawing attention to games the wider Steam community overlooked. Curator picks reflect individual tastes, so the same logic applies here.

The ten picks
The entries below follow the order of PC Gamer’s roundup and are grouped by what each game offers rather than by a quality score. Each one lists a hook, its core loop, the player it suits best, and one caveat.
1. Project Silverfish: a non-linear sandbox shooter
- Hook: A STALKER-like setting with a non-linear layout and encounters with rival factions.
- Core loop: Explore, scavenge loot, and fight through faction encounters at your own pace.
- Best for: Players who want a long-form shooter built around exploration rather than scripted set pieces.
- Caveat: This is an early-access game. Its systems and content may still change, so check its current access status before you buy.
2. Contract Rush DX: a run-and-gun platformer
- Hook: A Newgrounds-inspired action game with a strong sense of animated style.
- Core loop: Stages can be tackled in different orders, you recruit characters, and optional missions add replay value.
- Best for: Players who enjoy short, repeatable platforming runs and stylish presentation.
- Caveat: The emphasis is on action and replayability rather than story, so it is a poor fit if narrative drives your interest.
3. Great God Grove: a dialogue-driven adventure
- Hook: You capture phrases from characters and deploy them as solutions in a strange, comic world.
- Core loop: Talk to characters, collect the right words, and use them to move the story and solve problems.
- Best for: Point-and-click fans who want an unusual verbal puzzle mechanic.
- Caveat: The whole design depends on language. If wordplay wears thin for you, the experience will too.
4. Missile Command Delta: an escape-room and tactics hybrid
- Hook: Teen characters explore a Cold War bunker, and the missile defense sequences are turn-based.
- Core loop: Puzzle-solving in the bunker feeds into turn-based missile defense, where you have to conserve resources.
- Best for: Players who like planning and enjoy genre mash-ups.
- Caveat: The puzzle and tactics halves are interlocked. Players who want only one of those experiences may find the other half a detour.
5. Shooty Shooty Robot Invasion: a comic first-person romp
- Hook: A funny first-person game built on town exploration, character encounters, and errands.
- Core loop: Wander the town, talk to its residents, complete tasks, and fight robots when the situation calls for it.
- Best for: Players seeking a low-pressure shooter with humor and light structure.
- Caveat: Combat is a supporting element rather than the core attraction.
6. Desecrators: a procedural six-degrees-of-freedom shooter
- Hook: A roguelike tribute to free-flying shooters with procedurally generated spaces.
- Core loop: Fly through generated spaces, with each run arranged differently.
- Best for: Players who enjoy roguelikes and want to fly in three dimensions. PC Gamer notes online co-op support.
- Caveat: Procedural generation trades handcrafted level design for variety, so individual spaces will not be as carefully authored as in a hand-built game.
7. Wyrmhall: Brush & Banter: a short artifact-cleaning simulation
- Hook: A goblin cleans strange artifacts while chatting with unusual clients.
- Core loop: Clean each artifact and converse with clients as the work proceeds.
- Best for: Players who want a brief, low-impact, comic game they can finish in one sitting.
- Caveat: PC Gamer estimates its length at about two hours. Expect a short experience, not a long campaign.
8. Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo: an urban Zelda-like
- Hook: Dungeon exploration, puzzles, and upgrades built around a single yoyo.
- Core loop: The yoyo works as a weapon, a traversal tool, and a puzzle device, so each new upgrade opens different routes.
- Best for: Players who want an interconnected action-adventure structure in the style of classic action-adventure games.
- Caveat: The design rewards returning to earlier areas with new tools, which some players find satisfying and others find slow.
9. Lingo 2: a word-puzzle adventure
- Hook: A minimalist labyrinth in which you type into terminals and unlock letters as abilities.
- Core loop: Type words into terminals, unlock new letters, and use them to get through the labyrinth.
- Best for: Players who enjoy difficult, language-based environmental puzzles.
- Caveat: The puzzles are demanding and the interface is spare, so expect long stretches of thinking rather than quick progress.
10. Decade: a time-travel narrative strategy
- Hook: A text-forward post-apocalyptic game about sending children through time.
- Core loop: You send children back with limited instructions and items, and your choices shape how they develop and which endings are possible.
- Best for: Players who value consequential narrative decisions over action.
- Caveat: It is text-heavy and light on action, so pacing depends on how much you enjoy reading.

The table below compares the picks on genre and emphasis. Cells marked “not stated” were not given in PC Gamer’s roundup, so they should not be read as “none.” The only time figure in this list is the one noted for Wyrmhall, and it is PC Gamer’s estimate.

- Reviews: Review counts and sentiment change over time. Look at the most recent reviews rather than the summary label alone.
Backups if a pick is unavailable
If one of these games is delisted or does not suit your setup, GameSpot’s December 19, 2025 feature named four alternatives: Shotgun Cop Man, Monster Train 2, Level Devil, and Promise Mascot Agency. Those picks were chosen under GameSpot’s own definition of hidden gems, so they fit the same spirit of discovery while following a different standard.
