The biggest video game stories of 2021 ranged from workplace allegations and console shortages to a landmark platform dispute, studio shake-ups and a year of games that both delighted and disappointed. Here are ten defining stories, ordered as an editorial selection—not an objective ranking—of the events that most clearly affected players and the business around them.

1. Activision Blizzard faced a workplace crisis

A California lawsuit alleging workplace misconduct at Activision Blizzard turned the company into the focus of a wider industry debate about working conditions, accountability and leadership. The allegations were allegations, not findings established by the lawsuit itself. Employees staged walkouts and called for leadership changes, making the story about more than corporate reputation: workers were publicly pressing for a response to the conditions they described.

Windows Central included the controversy among the year’s biggest gaming stories, and TIME’s year-end coverage described the allegations and employee response. Together, they show why this was a defining 2021 story: it brought workplace concerns into the center of gaming news, while leaving the legal claims to be assessed through the relevant proceedings rather than treating them as proven facts.

2. Pandemic disruption kept reshaping game development

The disruption did not end when 2020 did. GameSpot described development delays as a continuing effect of the pandemic, while the British Film Institute (BFI) connected delays and production challenges to changing work conditions and supply-chain problems. Major games were pushed into 2022, altering release plans well beyond the year in which the disruption began.

  • Officially licensed
  • From the hit novels and video games
  • A brand new sculpt of Geralt
  • Features him ready for battle in his Grandmaster Ursine armor
  • Figure stands 9.5" tall

For players, a delay meant waiting longer for anticipated releases; for studios, it meant adapting production schedules to difficult conditions. The year’s announcements were a reminder that a game’s planned launch date is not a guarantee, especially when teams are working through widespread disruption.

3. PS5 and Xbox Series X shortages made the new generation hard to access

New-console supply remained a major frustration in 2021. BFI linked shortages affecting the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X to chip constraints and supply-chain problems; GameSpot also described supply shortages as part of the pandemic’s continuing impact. The issue was not a lack of interest in the new generation, but that interested players could struggle to obtain the hardware.

BFI quoted Sony chief Jim Ryan describing the situation: “we understand the inventory constraints remain a source of frustration for many of our customers”. The shortage affected the practical experience of a console-generation transition: new systems and their games were available as products, but access to the systems was constrained.

4. Microsoft completed its ZeniMax acquisition, sharpening questions about platform control

Microsoft completed its acquisition of ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda, shifting control of a major group of studios. The deal fed a larger question for players: how might ownership affect where games appear and how they are distributed?

GameSpot and Windows Central treated the acquisition as a significant platform story, particularly in the context of Microsoft’s emphasis on Game Pass. The transaction was a completed change in ownership; its consequences for future game availability were a separate question. The 2021 coverage captured the stakes without making every future release decision a certainty.

5. Epic Games v. Apple put mobile game distribution in the spotlight

The Epic Games v. Apple dispute made app-store rules and payments a prominent gaming story. Beyond the companies involved, the case drew attention to who sets the terms for distributing games on mobile platforms and how money flows through those storefronts.

Windows Central highlighted the dispute as one of 2021’s defining stories. Its importance to gaming lay in the broader platform question it exposed: developers and storefront operators can have competing interests in access, fees and control. The case made those tensions visible to a much wider audience.

6. Google shut down Stadia’s first-party development group

Google closed Stadia Games and Entertainment, the group responsible for Stadia’s first-party game development push. The move was a clear change in direction for the company’s own game-making effort, even as Stadia itself remained a separate service.

Windows Central and BFI both included the shutdown in their 2021 retrospectives. For the industry, it was a reminder that platform ambitions and the ability to sustain in-house game development are not the same thing. For players, it raised questions about what a platform could offer when its first-party plans changed.

7. NFTs and blockchain proposals met debate and resistance

NFTs and blockchain-related ideas became part of gaming’s public conversation in 2021, alongside a wider debate about the metaverse. Some of the attention came from company positioning and forecasts, rather than established adoption or a broadly demonstrated change to how players experienced games.

Windows Central and GameSpot covered the debate and resistance around these proposals. It is important to distinguish the discussion from a settled outcome: proposals and predictions were not proof that these models had become a standard part of gaming. Their significance that year was the argument they prompted about what games might become—and what players and developers would accept.

8. Netflix made an initial move into mobile games

Netflix entered mobile gaming and acquired Night School Studio, a development studio. The company’s move brought a major entertainment subscription brand into games, but its 2021 entry was limited rather than evidence that it had already become a broad gaming platform.

GameSpot included Netflix’s move among the year’s important industry developments. It reflected a wider interest in how companies outside traditional console publishing might use games, studios and subscriptions to expand their entertainment offerings.

9. The Nintendo Switch OLED reveal reset expectations

Nintendo revealed the Switch OLED model in 2021. The announcement mattered partly because expectations and rumors had led some observers to anticipate more than the hardware Nintendo ultimately announced. BFI noted the gap between those expectations and the reveal.

The episode illustrated a familiar pattern in gaming hardware coverage: speculation can become a story of its own before a manufacturer confirms what it is actually making. The reveal was news; expectations beyond the announced features were not confirmed product specifications.

10. Games delivered memorable highs—and conspicuous disappointments

2021 was not only a year of industry disruption. BFI highlighted Forza Horizon 5 and Psychonauts 2 among the year’s notable games, while describing the release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition as a critical disappointment. Those contrasting responses captured a year in which major releases could be celebrated or sharply criticized.

Xbox’s June 13 showcase offered one contemporary snapshot of the coming slate: Xbox said it showed 30 titles, 27 of them included with Xbox Game Pass, and described its first-party lineup as coming from 23 Xbox studios. These are Xbox’s own figures for that showcase, not independent measurements of the full industry. Separately, BFI reported that Microsoft announced 18 million Game Pass subscribers in January 2021; that was a January figure, not a year-end count. The year’s games and announcements made clear both what players could look forward to and how much of the anticipated slate remained subject to delay.
