Start by identifying the deck’s constraint or advantage, then specialize only when the run gives you a reason.
The official Steam listing describes 15 decks with distinct modifiers and frames the core strategy as combining valid poker hands with Jokers to create synergies. The deck effects and unlocks below are documented in the 2026 Balatro HQ deck guide and cross-checked against the Balatro Wiki’s deck listing; strategic advice is conditional interpretation of those mechanics, not a claim of tested win rates.

How to build a winning plan around your deck
Before committing to a hand type or spending your early cash, identify what the deck actually changes. It may give you more attempts, make draws more predictable, alter your shop access, or force a trade-off in Joker capacity. Those advantages matter only when they support a scoring plan that your current Jokers and hand levels can sustain.
- Read the starting modifier. Decide whether it affects hands, discards, cash, hand size, Joker slots, consumables, or the ranks and suits in your deck.
- Keep your hand plan flexible. A deck can make a hand easier to pursue, but it does not guarantee that hand will be drawn or that it will score enough.
- Evaluate each shop in context. Compare a purchase with the value of keeping the cash, addressing an immediate scoring shortfall, or saving for a later shop. There is no universal optimal-spending formula.
- Choose hands with the whole build in mind. A hand’s value depends on its base scoring and how it interacts with the Jokers and other effects you have acquired.
- Separate a run win from an endless-score attempt. The Steam listing describes victory as beating the final Ante; it treats endless play, difficulty settings, and seeded or challenge runs as distinct ways to play.
Randomness is part of the decision: the official Steam description emphasizes that pickups, discards, and Joker choices can change a run. No named empirical win-rate statistic or controlled deck comparison is established by the sources cited here, so the advice below should not be read as a ranking of guaranteed outcomes.

Strategy for each of the 15 decks
Modifiers and unlock details in this section are documented by the 2026 Balatro HQ guide and cross-checked against the Balatro Wiki deck listing. The play suggestions are practical interpretations of those effects, not personally tested win rates.
| Deck | Starting modifier | How to adapt |
|---|---|---|
| Red | +1 discard each round. | Use the additional attempt to look for a hand that fits your current scoring effects. It is useful flexibility, not a reason to discard without a target. |
| Blue | +1 hand each round. | Use the extra hand as another scoring attempt or as flexibility when finishing a Blind. Keep building around hands and Jokers that actually contribute to your score. |
| Yellow | Starts with $10 extra. | Treat the additional starting cash as early-run flexibility. Buy an upgrade that helps now if one appears, but consider how much cash you want to carry into later shops. |
| Green | At round end, pays $2 per remaining hand and $1 per remaining discard; no interest. | Unused hands and discards have a payout, but interest accumulation is disabled. Weigh that payout against the chance that spending a resource helps you clear the Blind. |
| Black | +1 Joker slot and −1 hand each round. | The extra slot can support a scoring or economy engine, but fewer hands make each scoring attempt more consequential. Prioritize a coherent set of Jokers over filling slots for their own sake. |
| Magic | Starts with Crystal Ball and two The Fool cards. | Make use of the starting consumable setup when it fits your developing plan. Let later Tarot and Planet options determine whether to continue investing in that direction. |
| Nebula | Starts with Telescope; −1 consumable slot. | Use Telescope’s hand-leveling benefit where it supports the hands you are actually playing. With less consumable capacity, be selective about what to keep. |
| Ghost | Spectral cards may appear in shops; starts with Hex. | Consider a Spectral effect when it strengthens the build taking shape. Shop access does not make every Spectral card an automatic purchase. |
| Abandoned | Starts without face cards (J, Q, K). | Plan around the altered rank distribution. The community guide points to pairs and flushes as consistency-friendly routes; treat them as options, not guaranteed draws or exact odds. |
| Checkered | Starts with 26 Spades and 26 Hearts. | Flush plans are more accessible with only two suits in the starting deck. Draws are still uncertain, so let your scoring effects and actual cards determine whether to pursue a flush. |
| Zodiac | Starts with Tarot Merchant, Planet Merchant, and Overstock. | Use the stronger starting shop access to look for card modifications and hand-leveling opportunities that fit your run, rather than buying upgrades just because they are available. |
| Painted | +2 hand size; −1 Joker slot. | The larger hand improves draw flexibility, while the reduced Joker capacity makes each slot more valuable. Favor Jokers that work together and support your chosen scoring plan. |
| Anaglyph | Gains a Double Tag after each Boss Blind defeated. | Judge each tag by its effect and when you can use it. The value changes with the tag and the run’s circumstances, so there is no single rule for when to spend one. |
| Plasma | Balances Chips and Mult when scoring; base Blind size is ×2. | Because scoring balances Chips and Mult, consider how both sides contribute instead of investing exclusively in one. Account for the doubled base Blind requirement when judging whether the build is keeping pace. |
| Erratic | Every card’s rank and suit are randomized. | Inspect your actual starting distribution before choosing a hand plan. Flushes and hands with repeated ranks may be options, while straights are less predictable; the specific deck you receive matters. |
Which deck should you choose?
Compare decks by the resource or uncertainty they change, rather than treating them as a fixed difficulty ladder. The 2026 Balatro HQ guide recommends Red to newer players for its extra discard, describes Abandoned as consistency-oriented, and calls Black and Plasma popular options for wins and large scores. Those are the guide’s recommendations, not independently measured win-rate results or a universal ranking.

| If you want to weigh… | Look at… | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| More chances to find a hand | Red, Blue | Red adds a discard; Blue adds a hand. Neither replaces the need for a scoring engine. |
| Starting cash or round-end resource value | Yellow, Green | Yellow gives cash at the start; Green rewards unused hands and discards while disabling interest. |
| More capacity with a trade-off | Black, Painted, Nebula | Black adds a Joker slot but removes a hand; Painted enlarges your hand but removes a Joker slot; Nebula reduces consumable capacity. |
| More structured shop or consumable access | Magic, Ghost, Zodiac | Each changes starting resources or shop availability. Their value depends on what appears and whether it fits your plan. |
| A changed rank or suit distribution | Abandoned, Checkered, Erratic | These alter which hands are natural to pursue, but your actual draws still decide what is practical. |
| Tag-driven variance or altered scoring demands | Anaglyph, Plasma | Anaglyph depends on tag outcomes and timing; Plasma changes the Chips/Mult balance and raises the base Blind size. |
