What the critic scores show
On the Metacritic Xbox Series X critic page, Towerborne has a 73 Metascore from four reviews. Metacritic labels the reception “Mixed or Average”; the page lists two positive reviews, two mixed reviews and no negative reviews. The scores span 60 to 81, a meaningful spread for such a small group.
Read that figure as the result on this specific page, not a representative consensus across platforms. Four reviews are too few to settle every question about the game, and the available evidence does not establish a comprehensive cross-platform aggregate.
Why review dates and versions matter
Towerborne entered Early Access on Steam on September 10, 2024, before its full release on February 26, 2026. A review from the preview period assesses an earlier stage of the game, so it should not automatically be treated as a judgment of the completed release. Check the publication date and, where stated, the build or release context before comparing reviews.

The full-release announcement describes a premium game with a complete story campaign, offline story play and optional online co-op. That release context may differ from what a reviewer encountered during Early Access or Xbox Game Preview.
What critics focus on
Combat and accessibility
Xbox describes the game as a side-scrolling action RPG brawler built around combo-based combat and gear customization. In the Metacritic excerpts, Generación Xbox calls the experience accessible and entertaining. That speaks to one outlet’s assessment, rather than proving that every player will find the combat equally approachable.

TheXboxHub’s excerpt highlights fast combat, multiplayer, solo play and the gear chase, including the loop of fighting, grinding and upgrading. Players deciding whether that loop suits them should look for how individual reviews balance the appeal of improving a character against the repetition involved in earning and upgrading gear.
Campaign and structure
The full-release announcement foregrounds a complete story campaign, missions, bounties and side quests. When reading criticism of the campaign, distinguish reviews of the full release from reviews of an earlier preview build; they may be assessing different amounts or stages of content.

Solo, co-op and offline play
Xbox Wire describes offline story play with optional online co-op. Steam lists single-player and online co-op, and says up to three other Aces can join the player. Those details make solo suitability and the co-op experience separate review questions: a positive multiplayer impression does not by itself establish how well the game works for someone playing alone.
Art direction and the move to full release
MondoXbox’s excerpt praises the art direction and intuitive gameplay, while saying the transition to the final form felt less engaging than the Early Access period. This is that outlet’s perspective, not a settled critical consensus; readers should weigh it alongside the review’s date and the version it covers.

How player reviews compare
Steam’s listing snapshot showed 70% positive purchaser reviews from 1,017 reviews overall, while recent reviews were 54% positive from 22 reviews. These are volatile user-review figures, not critic scores, and the recent sample is particularly small. They offer another perspective on player sentiment but should not be merged with the Metacritic critic score.
Release details and where it is available
Xbox Wire lists the full game for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and PlayStation 5, and says it is available through Game Pass Premium and Ultimate. The launch announcement listed the Standard Edition at $24.99 and Deluxe Edition at $29.99; those are announced prices and may vary by region, storefront, sale or date.
