Transformers: Battlegrounds is a turn-based tactics game built around a recognizable Autobot cast, straightforward battles and a younger-player-friendly approach. It is an approachable first tactics game for Transformers fans, but critics found its challenge and strategic depth limited. Steam sales ended in December 2025 after the publisher’s licensing agreement concluded; the publisher says existing Steam owners can keep playing.
What kind of game is Transformers: Battlegrounds?
Developed by Coatsink and published by Outright Games, Transformers: Battlegrounds launched on October 23, 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC, according to Bandai Namco’s launch announcement. Rather than a real-time action game, it is a turn-based tactics adventure: you command Autobots including Bumblebee, Windblade and Optimus Prime in an original battle against Megatron’s Decepticons over the Allspark.

What do the reviews say?
Metacritic’s PS4 page displays a 64 Metascore from four critic reviews, categorized as “Mixed or Average.” This is a small, platform-specific aggregate, not a consensus across every version. The reviews behind it date from 2020–2021, while the displayed score was accessed in 2026. Metacritic’s PS4 critic page shows the sample.
#1 Best Overall
- As evil Megatron closes in on the allspark, Bumblebee and the Autobots need a new Commander to help save Earth - you!
- assemble your squad and roll out for a battle that will Rage from central city to cybertron... And even to the local multiplayer Arcade.
- LEAD THE AUTOBOTS – Command BUMBLEBEE, WINDBLADE, OPTIMUS PRIME and more heroes in thrilling strategic battles
- FROM EARTH TO CYBERTRON – Smash and blast across cities, forests, deserts and beyond in explosive missions
- HONE YOUR SKILLS – Accessible controls and 3 difficulty modes welcome beginners and put tacticians to the test
The favorable case is accessibility. TheSixthAxis scored the game 80 and called it a strong entry point to turn-based strategy for younger Transformers fans. PlayStation Official Magazine UK scored it 70, describing a simple game that is easy to understand and fun to finish. The counterpoint is depth: GamingBolt scored it 50, citing a lack of greater challenge or complexity. Taken together, these reviews suggest a relaxed, readable introduction to tactics rather than a demanding strategy game.
Common Sense Media likewise says the system works for the most part but criticizes the challenge level and enemy AI; that is the outlet’s assessment, not a platform-wide technical test. Its review offers a separate family-focused perspective.

Is Transformers: Battlegrounds like XCOM?
Only in the broad sense that it is a turn-based squad tactics game. Some critics used XCOM as a reference point for its structure, but they characterized Transformers: Battlegrounds as comparatively relaxed and simple. The comparison should not set expectations for the same tactical complexity: its appeal is a more approachable battle system and the Transformers cast, not a deep strategy sandbox.
Is it good for kids?
Bandai Namco displays a PEGI 7+ rating on the product page. Separately, Common Sense Media recommends the game for ages 10+ and identifies fantasy violence. Those figures serve different purposes: PEGI is a regional age rating, while Common Sense Media’s age is editorial guidance. Parents should consider the fantasy combat and the individual child rather than treating either number as a universal rule.

Can you play with a friend?
Yes. The publisher’s product page lists local multiplayer, and its launch announcement calls out co-op alongside single-player. The material cited here does not specify the exact co-op setup or support for online multiplayer, so check the listing for the platform and edition you are considering if those details matter.
Is Transformers: Battlegrounds still available?
Availability depends on the storefront and region. Outright Games announced on November 19, 2025 that the game would leave Steam at the end of December because its licensing agreement had concluded. The notice says people who already owned it would retain it in their Steam libraries and could continue playing. Read the publisher’s Steam notice for that dated update.
The publisher also lists a physical Standard Edition on its official game page. That confirms the edition existed, not that it is currently in stock. The cited information does not establish the game’s present status on other digital stores or current physical inventory; check the relevant regional storefront or retailer before buying.
Quick Recap
Who should play it?
- A good fit: Transformers fans, younger players, or newcomers who want an approachable turn-based game with familiar characters and local multiplayer.
- Look elsewhere if: You want demanding enemy behavior, extensive tactical systems or a high level of strategic challenge.
- Before purchasing: Verify that the edition and platform you want are currently available in your region, particularly if you are seeking a Steam copy or physical disc.
