Its approachable battles and substantial solo modes make it appealing beyond Touhou fandom, while the soundtrack and roster give fans extra reasons to play. The clearest reservation in a prominent review is clumsy English story localization.
What kind of game is Touhou Spell Bubble?
TAITO describes Touhou Spell Bubble as a blend of Puzzle Bobble—known as Bust a Move in North America—and Touhou Project characters and music. TAITO lists Nintendo Switch as its platform, calls the release “Download only,” and gives its release date as October 29, 2020. TAITO’s official product page
Instead of simply trying to clear your own board, you compete for a higher score before the song ends. Fire colored bubbles to connect groups of three or more. Clearing larger groups can trigger a rhythm prompt: press buttons in time with markers on screen to add to your score. Special bubbles and character-specific spell cards introduce tactical effects, so shots can serve both the puzzle and the contest. Nintendo Life’s review
How do the reviews rate it?
Nintendo Life’s Pete Davison rated the European version 8/10 on November 4, 2020. The review praised the easy-to-learn rules, helpful feedback for newcomers, soundtrack variety, presentation and amount of single-player content. Its main criticism was the English story localization: Davison wrote, “The only area that lets things down a bit is the localisation; the dialogue in the main story mode is very clumsy, which makes it hard to engage fully with.” That is one reviewer’s assessment of the version reviewed, not a current aggregate score.

Pure Nintendo’s December 2, 2020 review also found the rhythm layer enjoyable and described the story as light, goofy fun. It pointed to Challenge Mode as a way to get into battles without following the story. The difference in emphasis is useful: the story may be part of the game’s charm for some players, but Challenge Mode offers another route through its puzzle battles. Pure Nintendo’s review
What is included, and is Touhou knowledge required?
Nintendo’s US store description lists 20 characters, 60 spell cards and 50 arranged tracks, including 12 tracks described as new and exclusive to the game. Those counts make the Touhou material a major part of the package, not merely a character skin over a generic puzzle game. Nintendo’s US listing

The core rules are presented as easy to learn, and Nintendo Life reported that the game’s feedback helps newcomers understand more advanced mechanics. The available reviews do not establish that prior Touhou knowledge is necessary to play. Expect the character roster, music and story references to mean more if you already know the series, but the bubble-matching and rhythm contest are the central play loop.
What can you play solo or with another person?
Single-player
The game includes story and Challenge modes, alongside tutorials. Nintendo Life praised the volume of solo content, and Pure Nintendo likewise described these different ways to approach the battles. Pure Nintendo’s review

Local and online multiplayer
Nintendo’s current US listing specifies single-system and online play for one to two players. Some 2020 reviews describe online play as absent; those launch-era statements are outdated or incomplete against Nintendo’s current listing. For present availability, the platform-holder’s listing is the better reference. Nintendo’s US listing
What platform, language and download details matter?
Nintendo’s US listing identifies a digital Nintendo Switch edition, a 2.9 GB download and Japanese and American English language support. It lists TV, tabletop and handheld modes, and says Switch 2 behavior is supported and consistent with Nintendo Switch. These are store-listed specifications, not independent compatibility or performance tests. Nintendo’s US listing

TAITO labels the Switch release download-only, so do not assume the official release is a physical cartridge. Nintendo also lists character and music add-ons, including a Suika Ibuki Character Pack dated September 17, 2026, as well as multiple 2024 packs. A Nintendo Canada bundle listing dated September 3, 2026 combines the game with the Scarlet Devil Land Music Pack and describes 20 characters and 65 Touhou arrangements; that bundle’s listing does not establish the same offer or terms in the US or elsewhere. DLC, bundle contents, prices and regional availability can change, so check the eShop for your region before buying. It is a strong fit if you want an accessible puzzle game with a more competitive, music-driven scoring loop than straightforward board clearing. The Touhou roster and arrangements are a meaningful part of the appeal, while story and Challenge modes provide solo options and Nintendo lists both local and online play. If story dialogue is central to your enjoyment, take the English localization criticism seriously; if not, Challenge Mode offers battles without requiring you to follow the story closely.

For comparison with a conventional bubble puzzler, the key difference is the objective: you are racing the song’s timer for points, with rhythm prompts and spell effects layered onto matching groups. The Nintendo store’s base-game description gives useful scope—20 characters, 60 spell cards and 50 arranged tracks—but those are publisher-provided content counts, not a measure of how much of the material you will personally enjoy.
