The review figures below refer to A Kingdom Rebuilt, not the earlier PC game Townsmen.
What are the critic scores for Townsmen: A Kingdom Rebuilt?
Two aggregators show a similar, middling picture, though they use different review pools and scoring systems. These are snapshots of the pages’ listed reviews and can change if the pools are updated.
| Aggregator | Score and review pool | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic | 64 Metascore from eight critic reviews | Metacritic displays two positive and six mixed reviews. |
| OpenCritic | 63 top critic average from 11 critic reviews | OpenCritic reports that 9% of critics recommend the game. |
The figures should not be treated as a single combined score: the aggregators list different numbers of reviews, and OpenCritic’s recommendation rate is a separate measure from its average.
What do critics say about the game?
A Kingdom Rebuilt is a medieval city-building and economic-management game. Players develop a settlement, serve townspeople, and manage production chains that can run from mining, logging, and farming to making goods such as tools, clothing, and jewelry. It offers scenarios as well as sandbox play. Metacritic’s game listing describes those core activities.

The favorable case is that the layered town-building and resource-management loop gives city-sim fans a pleasant, engaging project. The reservations concern how that loop feels: Switch critics mention awkward or complicated controls, repetition, a basic presentation, and little that is new for experienced players. These are themes in the reviews, not results of a direct comparison across platforms.
How do the Switch and PS4 reviews differ?
Metacritic’s Nintendo Switch critic page lists eight reviews, with scores from 50 to 75 and an aggregate score of 64. The reviews point to both genre appeal and friction: some value the layered building systems, while others emphasize controls, repetition, or limited novelty. Their views on the modes are not uniform; at least one excerpt favors scenarios over sandbox play, while another notes broad content alongside repetition. See the Switch critic reviews on Metacritic.

- Epic Solo Campaign: Kingdom Legacy is a solo adventure where players start with just 10 kingdom cards and expand their domain through exploration and decision-making.
- Progressive Gameplay: Over the course of the campaign, players will face tough choices and unlock new game mechanisms that evolve the game as they progress.
- Exploration and Strategy: Each decision impacts the kingdom’s growth, and players must balance exploration with strategic planning to succeed.
- Long-Term Adventure: The campaign offers a rich and immersive experience that unfolds over time, keeping players engaged through multiple sessions.
- Interactive Tutorial: A helpful tutorial video guides players through getting started, ensuring that they understand the rules and mechanics before embarking on their journey.
The PS4 reviews also disagree. PlayStation Country scored the game 70 and described it as a good mobile conversion that still needed issues addressed; PlayStation Universe scored it 55, citing familiar management mechanics, limited innovation, waiting, and a price it considered high. Those price comments reflect the publications’ assessments at review time, not guidance on what the game costs now. Metacritic lists the PS4 reviews here.
Which players are most likely to enjoy it?
- A good fit: players who enjoy gradually growing a settlement, balancing an economy, and organizing production chains.
- More uncertain: experienced city-sim players looking for substantial mechanical novelty, or players who find menu-heavy console controls frustrating.
- Consider your preferred pace: one PS4 review calls out waiting for timers, a potential drawback if you want constant, immediate action.
- Choose your mode by preference: critics differ on scenarios and sandbox, so the reviews do not establish one mode as the clear choice for everyone.
Is this the same game as Townsmen on PC?
No. Townsmen and Townsmen: A Kingdom Rebuilt are separate review subjects, and their scores should not be combined. Metacritic’s earlier PC page lists three critic reviews: GameSpew scored it 70 on January 5, 2017; GameStar scored it 62 on June 30, 2017; and Games.cz scored it 40 on February 14, 2017. The Games.cz excerpt criticizes the PC port, while GameStar describes the game as suitable for beginners but less compelling for advanced genre players. See the original Townsmen PC reviews.
