In psychology, a personality trait is a relatively stable tendency inferred from recurring patterns in how someone behaves, thinks, feels, and responds. Traits can help describe and predict behavior, but they do not dictate what a person will do in every situation.

What is a personality trait?

The APA Dictionary of Psychology defines a personality trait as “a relatively stable, consistent, and enduring internal characteristic that is inferred from a pattern of behaviors, attitudes, feelings, and habits in the individual.” In plain terms, a trait is a way of describing a pattern that appears repeatedly, rather than naming a single action.

For example, one quiet conversation does not establish that someone is introverted. A trait label is more meaningful when it reflects a recurring tendency across time and situations.

Do traits determine behavior?

No. Traits describe tendencies, not rules. The SAGE Encyclopedia of Social Psychology explains that traits indicate a higher probability of certain behavior, but should not be understood deterministically. The OECD overview of personality characteristics likewise describes trait influence as probabilistic and shaped by other factors.

A trait can therefore help explain why a behavior is more likely for someone without guaranteeing that behavior. Circumstances and other aspects of personality also matter. A trait label cannot, by itself, predict every choice or explain the immediate reason for a particular action.

How are traits different from personality?

A trait is one dimension or tendency used to describe recurring differences in how people act, think, and feel. Personality is the broader configuration of characteristics and behavior that includes traits along with other elements.

The American Psychological Association’s overview of personality includes interests, drives, values, self-concept, abilities, and emotional patterns as well as major traits. So calling someone conscientious, for instance, describes one aspect of that person; it is not a complete account of their personality.

What can a trait description tell you?

Trait descriptions are useful for summarizing recurring patterns and making broad predictions about conduct. They are less useful when treated as explanations of a specific moment or as a complete account of how a person became the way they are. The APA Dictionary notes that trait theories can summarize and predict conduct, but do not explain its proximal causes or provide a developmental account.

  • Useful: describing a tendency observed across patterns of behavior, feelings, attitudes, or habits.
  • Not enough on its own: deciding why someone acted a certain way in one situation, how the trait developed, or what the person will always do.

How to use trait labels carefully

  • Look for recurring patterns rather than drawing conclusions from one action.
  • Describe a tendency, not a certainty: a trait may make behavior more likely, not inevitable.
  • Keep the person and situation in view; a label captures only part of a broader personality.
