That makes it a continuation of the series’ timeline, not a remake. On the engine question, Treyarch describes its current tools as the shared Call of Duty engine—not simply an unchanged engine belonging to Infinity Ward.
Why is Black Ops 7 a Black Ops II sequel?
The connection is both chronological and creative. Black Ops II is set in 2025; Black Ops 7 takes place in 2035, returning to that established near-future world rather than starting from an entirely new era. Official Xbox coverage places Black Ops 7 after both Black Ops II and Black Ops 6, with David “Section” Mason leading the story and Raul Menendez returning. Xbox’s Black Ops 7 overview also describes a campaign playable solo or with up to four players, alongside multiplayer and round-based Zombies.
At Call of Duty Next in 2025, Treyarch Associate Creative Director Miles Leslie explained the link this way: “In a sense it’s a sequel to that, because that was in 2025.” He described Black Ops II as a foundation for a fictional near-future setting, and 2035 as a way to extend that world without moving too far away from it. The sequel label therefore refers to continuity in the story and setting; it does not mean Black Ops 7 remakes Black Ops II or reproduces its technology.
What does the Black Ops II timeline mean for gameplay?
A return to the era gives Treyarch a framework for deciding not just what the story can reference, but what technology belongs in the world. The studio says Black Ops 7 supports wall jumps, while its 2035 setting predates the wall-running and thrust-jump technology associated with the later Black Ops III era. That choice ties movement to the fictional timeline instead of importing every ability from a later installment.

- This renewed game may come repackaged in a generic case. It has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
This is one reason the setting is more than a backdrop: it helps define which movement ideas fit the game. It does not, by itself, establish how the finished game will feel or perform.
Is Treyarch using Infinity Ward’s engine?
Treyarch’s description is more precise than “Infinity Ward’s engine.” In a 2024 interview with VGC, Treyarch Associate Creative Director Yale Miller said: “The unified engine, it’s just the Call of Duty engine.” He explained that Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer had been working on it, while Treyarch identified useful elements in both that shared technology and its own previous work. The studios’ collaboration lets them build on one another’s contributions.

- All-new create-a-class: Create-a-class has been re-imagined, introducing players to a new "pick-10" allocation system, allowing an unprecedented number of combinations of create-a-class content. Players no longer have to take content from each category instead, trade items from one category for extra items in another - any combination of 10 items makes almost anything possible.
- Pick 10 System: Ten points and nearly endless combinations: every piece of content is worth one point, and you can spend your 10 points in any way you like, encouraging a greater level of customization for individual play styles
- Wildcards: Also a point each, Wildcards allow players to "extend the system" and configure classes in more unique ways - players can take multiple perks from one category, equip their primary with three attachments, carry two lethals, and more
- All-new score streaks: Score Streaks reward players for helping their team win the game - capturing flags, defending your teammate with an assault shield, getting kills and assists are all examples of actions that help your team win and thus give you score.
- Upgraded weapons, attachments and equipment: Near-future warfare means upgrades in technology that soldiers will use in the field. Additionally, weapon perks are now built into the attachments.
It is fair to describe the shared engine as having an Infinity Ward lineage, but not as an unchanged, exclusive Infinity Ward engine. The studio’s wording emphasizes a unified Call of Duty toolset shaped across teams. VGC’s interview with Miller also discusses how Treyarch makes deliberate choices about a game’s look and sound within that shared foundation.
What changed between the Black Ops II and later engine eras?
“The Call of Duty engine” should not be read as a frozen set of technology. Treyarch’s engineering team says Black Ops II used an engine designed around older hardware. For Black Ops III and newer consoles, the studio replaced its prior forward-lighting approach with deferred rendering to handle more lights, and developed a new GPU-based animation system. These are examples of the team adapting technology to new hardware and project needs—not evidence that Black Ops 7’s visuals or performance result from one engine decision alone. Treyarch’s engineering account describes those changes.

That iterative approach was also reflected in a 2012 comment from Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia, reported by PC Gamer: “Engines, each time they get touched, they change. The creators alter them; they don’t modify what they don’t need to, and then they alter what they need to.” His remarks concern the studio’s approach to engine updates around the Black Ops II era; they are not a technical description of Black Ops 7’s present-day architecture. PC Gamer’s 2012 report provides that historical context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a shared engine make Black Ops 7 feel like other Call of Duty games?
Not necessarily. A shared technical base can give studios common tools, but it does not dictate every game’s identity. Treyarch has described choices about visual style, audio, lighting, and movement as intentional even within the unified engine. For Black Ops 7, the 2035 setting and its limits on movement technology are examples of how the studio can shape a game around its own story and design goals.

- An all-new Call of Duty - Black Ops storyline featuring new characters and returning characters
- Unique single-player campaign that contains two time periods linked by characters and their actions
- Special Strike Force missions, in which the players action affect the outcome of gameplay and the overall campaign
- Variety of multiplayer modes and play options
- Game Of The Year edition includes the Revolution DLC pack - Includes four multiplayer maps, a new Zombies map and mode, plus a fresh weapon in the form of the Peacekeeper sub machine gun
The most accurate distinction is between the common foundation and the decisions made for a particular game: the engine is shared across Call of Duty studios, while art direction, sound, movement, and setting can still make each installment distinct.
