Tricky Trials is the official name Minecraft gave update 1.21. Mojang announced the name on April 26, 2024, and released the free update for Java and Bedrock on June 13, 2024. Its defining addition is the Trial Chambers, underground structures built around combat challenges, keys, and loot.
Why Minecraft 1.21 is called Tricky Trials
Minecraft writer Sophie Austin announced the name in the official April 26, 2024 announcement: “Which is why we’re excited to announce that the 1.21 update will be called… Tricky Trials!” The name points to the update’s central feature: dungeon-like trials that ask players to face waves of hostile mobs and earn rewards.

When did Tricky Trials release?
Tricky Trials is no longer an upcoming update. Minecraft’s Java Edition 1.21 and Bedrock Edition 1.21 changelogs both give June 13, 2024 as the release date. It was released as a free game update, rather than a separate paid expansion. See the Java Edition 1.21 changelog and the Bedrock Edition 1.21 changelog.
What are Trial Chambers?
Trial Chambers are randomly generated structures found underground. Their rooms combine traps, combat encounters, and treasure, making exploration more active than simply searching for a chest. The structure’s distinctive challenge is the trial spawner: it produces hostile mobs for nearby players to fight, with the encounter designed to make the chamber’s rewards something players must earn.

Survive an encounter and a trial spawner may reward a trial key. Use trial keys to open vaults, which hold loot. The exact experience varies with the chamber layout and encounter, so a Trial Chamber is better understood as a repeatable combat-and-reward activity than as a fixed sequence of rooms. Minecraft’s Tricky Trials feature overview describes the chambers and their challenge mechanics.
How standard and ominous trials differ
Ominous trials are optional, harder versions of the chamber challenge. They add a riskier route to rewards: ominous keys open ominous vaults, which may contain a Heavy Core. The Heavy Core is one of the ingredients needed to craft the Mace. Minecraft’s May 30, 2024 release article explains the ominous trial and vault rewards.

What else did the update add?
The Breeze and Bogged
The Breeze is a nimble hostile mob found in Trial Chambers. Its wind attacks can knock players around, changing how they approach a fight. Defeating one can yield a Breeze Rod, used for wind-related crafting. Bogged, a new skeleton variant, also appears among the update’s hostile mobs.
The Mace and Wind Charges
The Mace’s smash attack grows stronger the farther the player falls before striking, rewarding careful timing and positioning. A Mace is crafted using a Breeze Rod and Heavy Core. Its exclusive enchantments are Density, Breach, and Wind Burst. Wind Charges provide another way to use wind effects in combat and movement.

The Crafter
The Crafter automates crafting. Give it a recipe’s ingredients and a redstone pulse, and it outputs the crafted item. This makes it useful for redstone builds that need to produce items without a player manually using a crafting table each time.
Building blocks and other additions
Tricky Trials also adds Copper and Tuff block variants, alongside items including trial keys, ominous bottles, and Breeze Rods. Together with the chambers, mobs, and redstone block, these additions give the update both an exploration-and-combat focus and new options for builders.
