The right definition depends on the context. The word alone does not identify a video-game-specific concept, so a turnover figure should always be read with its subject, period and calculation.
What does turnover mean?
Turnover is not one universal measure. In business statistics it usually refers to sales or business generated through ordinary activity. In workforce reporting it can mean employee separations. In inventory management it is a ratio relating sales costs to stock held. These figures measure different things and cannot be compared as if they were interchangeable.
Business turnover: sales and services
INSEE defines business turnover as the amount of business, excluding taxes, that a statistical unit conducts with third parties through its normal professional activity. It includes sales of goods and manufactured products, services and related activity. The UK Office for National Statistics’ Annual Business Survey definition also includes goods produced, goods bought and resold without further processing, and industrial and non-industrial services.
Statistical definitions are context-specific, not a universal accounting rule. The European Commission’s structural-business-statistics regulation defines turnover as totals invoiced for market sales of goods or services supplied to third parties during the reference period, excluding VAT and certain other income. INSEE cautions that turnover may not be a meaningful measure for comparisons when businesses or sectors differ in how they treat resale purchases and subcontracting.

What to check when comparing business turnover
- Which goods, services and other sales are included.
- The reference period, such as a month or financial year.
- Whether the figure excludes taxes, and which taxes.
- How resale purchases and subcontracting are treated.
Employee turnover: separations from an establishment
In the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ JOLTS terminology, turnover means an employee’s separation from an establishment. Separations include voluntary and involuntary departures as well as other separations. The rate depends on both the period and denominator: the BLS calculates a monthly rate by dividing monthly separations by the relevant monthly employment count, while its annual rate divides annual separations by average monthly employment for the year.
Those formulas mean a monthly rate and an annual rate are not automatically comparable. ISO/TS 30421:2021, Human resource management — Turnover and retention metrics, describes comparable workforce turnover and retention measures and emphasizes that interpretation matters when using the figures to decide on internal interventions or report to external stakeholders.

What to check when comparing workforce turnover
- Which employee groups make up the population being measured.
- Which types of separation are included.
- Whether the figure is monthly or annual.
- The denominator used to calculate the rate.
Inventory turnover: stock relative to sales costs
Statistics Canada describes inventory turnover as a measure of whether inventory is adequate for the volume of business and of management efficiency relative to other firms in the industry. Its cited method divides annual cost of sales by year-end inventory. The result is a ratio, not a count of employees or a measure of total sales.
There is no universally “good” inventory-turnover ratio in this definition: interpretation depends on the business and the relevant industry comparison. When comparing figures, check that the inputs and calculation method match and that the peer group is relevant.

How to interpret a turnover figure
Before drawing a conclusion from any turnover number, identify what is turning over, the population or activity included, the time period, the calculation or accounting treatment, and the comparison context. Without those details, even a precisely stated figure can be misleading. In a video-game context, the word may refer to one of these general business or workforce measures, but the term by itself does not establish a particular game mechanic, statistic or industry benchmark.
