Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion Remastered is a technically ambitious restoration of a brief, divisive 2000 Nintendo 64 shooter. Nightdive’s work modernizes the presentation and controls, but it does not change the underlying game’s short campaign or bring back its original multiplayer. It is most appealing to players curious about the series or looking for a compact retro FPS—not those expecting a long campaign or a multiplayer package.
What is Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion Remastered?
Nightdive Studios rebuilt the 2000 Nintendo 64 first-person shooter using its proprietary KEX Engine. The story follows a choice between siblings Joseph and Danielle Fireseed, who face Oblivion and the Flesh Eaters after Joshua—the protagonist of Turok 2—appears to have died. The publisher describes the character choice, but does not establish that the two routes amount to separate full campaigns.
The remaster’s technical ambitions are clear. Nightdive lists high-resolution textures, remastered environments and character models, updated weapons, enhanced lighting and rendering, anti-aliasing, bloom, ambient occlusion, dynamic shadows, motion blur, gamepad support, and new achievements. These are publisher-stated features, not independent test findings.
How good is the remaster, and how good is the game underneath?
Those are related but distinct questions. The available reviews generally recognize the restoration’s technical work while pointing to the original game’s limitations: its story and design divide opinion, and its campaign is short. Better presentation can make the old shooter more accessible, but it does not turn a brief campaign into a longer one or restore the N64 original’s multiplayer.

For a platform-specific view, Tom Massey’s North American Nintendo Switch review for Nintendo Life, published December 11, 2023 and captured docked, scored the game 7/10. Massey described it as a solid, fun restoration, while criticizing the campaign’s brevity, noting the absent multiplayer, and calling the experience short-lived. The review’s $30 price reference was the launch-price context at the time, not a statement of today’s price.
Metacritic’s accessed snapshot showed a 71 Metascore from 9 critic reviews: 3 positive, 6 mixed, and none negative. Its user score was 7.2 from 13 ratings: 5 positive, 7 mixed, and 1 negative. These small, changing samples suggest a mixed-to-positive response, not a definitive measure of quality.

The publisher lists Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Nightdive’s current product page also links to Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Humble Bundle, and GOG. Availability, edition, and price can differ by storefront and region, so check the live listing for the platform you intend to use.
Dates vary by listing and region. Nightdive’s August 2023 announcement planned a November 14, 2023 release, and Nintendo UK lists November 14. Steam and Metacritic list November 30, 2023. Treat November 14 as the announced and regionally listed date, and November 30 as the date shown by Steam and Metacritic—not as one universal date across every platform and region.

What performance and controls should you expect?
Nightdive advertises support for up to 4K resolution and 120 frames per second on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. That is a publisher capability claim, not an independent benchmark, and it does not mean every platform or scene reaches both figures. The publisher also lists gamepad support; Nightdive says the Switch version has optional motion/gyro controls. Confirm platform-specific features on the relevant store page if a particular resolution, frame rate, or input method matters to you.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it worth buying?
It depends chiefly on what you want from a retro FPS. The remaster’s strongest case is its modernized presentation and support for contemporary platforms and gamepads. Its weaker case is as a long-form purchase: the campaign is short, and the original multiplayer is absent. Current pricing varies, and the available sources do not establish a complete cross-store price comparison.
