TuxMath, short for Tux, of Math Command, is an educational arcade game in which players solve arithmetic problems to destroy comets before they hit penguins’ igloos. It practices addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and relative numbers, with play designed to become harder and faster as levels progress.
How TuxMath plays
You play as Commander Tux. Equations appear on falling comets; enter the answer to destroy a comet and protect the penguins below. The game turns arithmetic into a quick-response challenge, so players must both calculate and react before a comet reaches an igloo. The Debian manual likewise describes TuxMath as an educational arcade game: Debian Trixie TuxMath manual.
What math does TuxMath teach?
- Addition and subtraction: Practice solving equations involving sums and differences.
- Multiplication and division: Work with products and quotients as the challenges advance.
- Relative numbers: The project lists this as a topic; the available description does not define a separate lesson sequence for it.
- Factoring and fractions: The project documents Factoroids, an included activity introduced in version 1.7.0. Players zap rocks in space while practicing factoring numbers and simplifying fractions.
The project describes levels that introduce more difficult material and faster play. Its stated aim is to make math feel like a game to enjoy rather than a tedious task. That is the project’s design goal, not evidence of measured learning gains or a substitute for a broader math curriculum. See the TuxMath project README for the project’s description and activity details.
Where to get TuxMath, and what to know about compatibility
TuxMath is open-source software. The Tux4Kids project page lists download and source-code routes, and its source is hosted in the Tux4Kids GitHub repository. A listing of download options does not by itself confirm that every installer is maintained or compatible with current operating systems.

It describes SDL graphics, keyboard and mouse input, and sound, and names Linux, 32-bit Windows, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, and BeOS/Haiku as supported systems at the time. Treat that platform list as historical, not as a current compatibility guarantee. The guide is available at TuxMath installation instructions.
For a separate distribution-specific reference, the Debian Trixie manual identifies package version 2.0.3-10. That is Debian package context, not proof of upstream release cadence or compatibility on other systems.
