Yes: selected Nintendo Switch games have free updates that can improve how they run on Nintendo Switch 2, with no paid upgrade pack required for those updates. But the improvements are title-specific, and “automatically” does not mean every game silently updates or runs better. Check Nintendo’s compatibility guidance and free-update list for each game you own.
What changes when you play a Switch game on Switch 2?
Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility with every title. Some games also have free updates or separate paid upgrades that add content or improve performance. Nintendo notes that selected games may be unsupported or not fully compatible; check its Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility information for the specific game.

For games with a free update, what changes depends on the title. Nintendo says updates may improve graphics or add support for features such as GameShare. One concrete performance example is ARMS: Nintendo lists a free update that optimizes frame rate for smoother movement on Switch 2. That is a title-specific enhancement, not evidence that every Switch game will receive a frame-rate boost.
Free game updates and paid upgrade packs are different
A free Switch game update is not the same thing as a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack. The free-update list describes title-specific changes; paid upgrade packs are separate offerings for select games, and their contents and terms vary. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack information explains the distinction and membership eligibility.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
For The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo lists its Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack at $9.99 USD as a separate purchase. Nintendo also says active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can download that pack at no additional cost. Those terms apply to that game’s pack; they should not be treated as a standard fee or membership benefit for every Switch 2 enhancement.

- Check compatibility: Look up the game on Nintendo’s compatibility page to see whether it is listed as compatible, unsupported, or subject to limitations.
- Check for a listed enhancement: Consult Nintendo’s free updates page. Confirm the exact title and the stated change; do not assume an update for one game applies to another.
- Connect Switch 2 to the internet and install the system update: Nintendo’s instructions require an internet connection and an up-to-date Switch 2 system.
- Launch the eligible game online and accept the offered download: Nintendo’s US guidance describes downloading the available game update when prompted. The word “automatically” should not be taken to mean every eligible update installs silently or without player action.
Nintendo’s UK free updates support page also lists title-level updates. Availability and listed details can change, so verify the current entry for your game rather than relying on a general claim that Switch games improve on Switch 2.
