Learn the common callouts, treat crossings and ledges as lethal hazards, and clear elevated angles before committing to a site. Riot’s Patch 13.04, dated August 18, 2026, lists Abyss in the Competitive and Deathmatch queues; check later patch notes for any subsequent rotation.
How Abyss is laid out
Riot introduced Abyss in Patch 8.11 as a 5v5 Spike map and described it as VALORANT’s first map without boundaries, set in the hidden fortress of the Scions of the Hourglass. The official map page emphasizes the endless chasm and the high-risk plays made possible by drops. Riot’s Patch 8.11 notes and official Abyss map page establish the setting and design intent.
The lane-and-site framework is familiar: attackers can approach two sites through three lanes. What changes the feel of those routes is the chasm, exposed edges, height differences, ropes, and destructible Vent doors. The precise route descriptions and names below come from fan references rather than a Riot-published tactical map, so use the in-game map to confirm geometry and agree on team terminology.
A side
A Main is the direct frontal approach to A Site. The fan route guide also identifies Vent as a connection between A and mid, A Tower as an elevated position overlooking A Site, and A Security as a deeper defensive position. Secret is described as a narrow outer ledge. These labels help orient a call, but the exact angle and path should be checked against the live map. I Love Valorant’s Abyss guide

Mid
The chasm divides mid. Fan references name Mid Bottom, Mid Bend, Mid Top, Library, and Catwalk. Catwalk access is described as involving a jump and rope, making it both a route and a movement risk. A call such as “mid” may not tell teammates which side of the chasm or crossing is involved; add the specific area when it matters. B side
The callout reference lists B Main, B Nest, B Site, B Tower, and B Danger. The route guide describes B Tower as elevated and Danger as a shortcut or outer-ledge route. Since these are secondary descriptions, check the map view and your team’s local language before relying on a precise approach or hold setup. Ropes and Vent doors
Riot confirms the map’s no-boundary design and focus on death drops. The secondary route guide describes ropes connecting selected high-ground or mid routes and doors at both Vent entrances that can be destroyed; once destroyed, a door stays open for the rest of that round. Treat the door details as fan-guide information, not an official Riot mechanic glossary. Riot’s Abyss map page and I Love Valorant’s Abyss guide
What are the Abyss callouts?
VALORANT Hub’s fan-made reference lists the following names as callout locations. Riot’s sources do not provide a definitive callout glossary, so think of these as common reference vocabulary—not a guarantee that every squad uses every name the same way. Before a match, align on unfamiliar labels using the in-game map.

How to play Abyss more safely and effectively
Cross dangerous ground before taking optional fights
Riot built death drops into the map’s identity, and its launch notes explicitly celebrated the possibility of knocking opponents off. A fall can decide a fight without a conventional kill, so avoid stopping for an unnecessary duel while exposed on a narrow crossing or near an edge. When you need to fight there, make the risk part of the call: “near edge,” “on bridge,” or the relevant route name gives teammates more context than an agent name alone. Riot’s Abyss map page and Patch 8.11 notes
Clear height before entering or planting
A Tower and B Tower are identified as elevated positions in the fan route guide. Before committing to either site, account for which elevated angles can see the entry or plant area. Use utility and coordinated clearing rather than treating a first glimpse of site as proof that it is safe. I Love Valorant’s Abyss guide

Call the side of mid and the crossing
Because the chasm splits mid and some routes involve jumps or ropes, a vague “mid” call can conceal a meaningful difference in position or rotation timing. Name the relevant sub-area—such as Mid Top, Mid Bend, or Catwalk—and mention a crossing or edge when that affects the play. The names are fan-reference terms, so match them to your team’s map language. VALORANT Hub’s Abyss callout reference and I Love Valorant’s Abyss guide
Choose routes by risk, control, and timing
A Main offers a straightforward approach to A, but a direct entrance can be predictable. Vent or mid may create a different attack angle, but only if the route is accessible, controlled, and safe to cross. This is a tactical reading of the described layout, not a universally proven best route. Pick the path your team can clear and communicate, and do not trade a faster rotation for an uncontrolled crossing.

Use utility for a purpose, not just because the map has edges
The chasm creates opportunities for displacement, but a knock-off attempt still depends on positioning and timing. Riot highlighted creative knock-offs as a feature players might explore; it did not establish a guaranteed setup or an optimal agent composition. Treat edge-focused utility as a situational option, and prioritize a reliable clear, safe crossing, or coordinated site entry when the opportunity is not there. Riot’s Patch 8.11 notes
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Abyss in the Competitive map pool?
Yes. Riot’s Patch 13.04, dated August 18, 2026, lists Abyss in the Competitive and Deathmatch queues and Breeze out. Map rotations change, so later official patch notes take precedence over that dated status. Riot’s Patch 13.04 notes
What the launch-era numbers say
In Riot’s July 30, 2024 State of the Maps update, maps producer Albert Robles reported more than 7 million games played on Abyss, more than 13 million players, more than 30 million hours of gameplay, and more than 9 million player falls. These are historical launch-era totals, not current counts. Riot’s State of the Maps 2024 update
