Ubisoft announced on December 3, 2024 that it would discontinue the free-to-play shooter, stop new downloads, registrations, and purchases immediately, and keep its servers running until June 3, 2025. That announced shutdown date has passed. Ubisoft said the game had not retained enough players to justify further significant investment. The same announcement covered closures of its San Francisco and Osaka production studios and a ramp-down of its Sydney production site.
Why did Ubisoft discontinue XDefiant?
Ubisoft attributed the decision to XDefiant’s inability to attract and retain enough players over the long term to compete at the level it wanted in the highly competitive free-to-play first-person shooter market. Marie-Sophie de Waubert, Ubisoft’s Chief Studios and Portfolio Officer, said the game’s results were too far from what the company needed to support further significant investment. That is Ubisoft’s stated rationale, rather than an independently verified diagnosis of the game’s performance. Ubisoft’s December 3, 2024 announcement also acknowledged the game’s encouraging start and committed fan base.

In his accompanying message, XDefiant executive producer Mark Rubin said that free-to-play games can take a long time to find their footing and become profitable. Ubisoft reported that more than 15 million people had played XDefiant and that it had broken the company’s internal record for fastest game to surpass 5 million users. Those are Ubisoft’s figures, not independently audited player totals. Rubin’s community message did not change the company’s decision to end the game.
When did XDefiant stop working?
Ubisoft’s announced service timeline was:
- December 3, 2024: New downloads, player registrations, and purchases stopped.
- Season 3: Ubisoft said it was still planned after the discontinuation announcement.
- June 3, 2025: Ubisoft’s planned date to switch off the servers. This date has passed.

Which Ubisoft studios were affected?
Ubisoft announced that it would close its San Francisco and Osaka production studios and ramp down its Sydney production site. These were not all described as the same action: the announcement identified San Francisco and Osaka as studio closures, while Sydney was to be wound down. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that a Ubisoft spokesperson said the company’s San Francisco business office would remain; that office was distinct from the production studio. Ubisoft said almost half of the worldwide XDefiant team would move to other Ubisoft roles. It also announced that 143 people would depart in San Francisco and said 134 departures in Osaka and Sydney were likely. These were announced or projected impacts, not final verified departure totals. Ubisoft’s December 3, 2024 announcement
Were XDefiant players eligible for refunds?
Rubin’s community notice said that purchasers of the Ultimate Founder’s Pack would receive a full refund. It also said players who had made a purchase in the 30 days before the announcement would be fully refunded, with refunds expected to process automatically within eight weeks. This describes Ubisoft’s announced policy; it does not establish that every eligible player ultimately received a refund. Mark Rubin’s community notice
How did Ubisoft later frame the closure?
In a January 9, 2025 strategic update, Ubisoft included XDefiant’s discontinuation and the closure of three production studios in its wider reviews of strategy, investment, and costs. The company also lowered its Q3 FY2024-25 net-bookings outlook to around €300 million, citing both XDefiant’s discontinuation and lower-than-expected holiday sales, mainly for Star Wars Outlaws. The €300 million figure was a forecast at that time, not a current figure or final result, and Ubisoft did not attribute the entire outlook change to XDefiant.
